I use Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface Cleaner for Amelia’s toys. I sometimes use Pampers Sanitizer Spray. I know this may seem silly, but I think some of these santizers may upset Amelia’s stomach and make her reflux worse (some say you don’t even need to wipe dry) when she puts the toys in her mouth that have been cleaned with them . I am a self-professed germophobe!!! Just wondering what some of you use to clean toys??? Also, some soft toys say not to put them in the washing machine. I have washed them anyway. Is there any danger in that? Or do they just put that on the tag because the toy may fall apart in the washing machine?

June 26, 2007 at 2:07 pm #37984hellbenntKeymastersome plastic toys can go in the dishwasher, in the top rack
stuffed animals- I’ve washed them in a mesh (lingerie) bag…
you can also freeze stuffed animals I’ve heard not sure this is true? anyone?- put them in a plastic bag & stick them in the freezer bcse if there’s anything living on them (bugs or bacteria) then I think they’d die?
June 26, 2007 at 2:12 pm #37986AnonymousInactiveLike Laura, I used to wash my baby’s toys in the diswasher (top rack). I never liked the germ killing products because I don’t buy their claims that you don’t have to dry them off and it’s fine for kids to swallow the stuff.

I know at daycare though, they sanitize with their homeade clorox cleaner (bleach & water)- not sure of the ratios but whatever is mandated by the state and they do not rinse. I wanted one of these when Seth was a baby but never got one; I am a total germ freak too (I used to wipe off NEW toys when he was a little baby!)

June 26, 2007 at 5:30 pm #38016AnonymousInactiveI’m too afraid to use the clorox wipes b/c of the warnings on the labels… I’m paranoid, though. If I wash them (gross, sorry!), then I use a solution of vinegar and water which is supposed to be a good antibacterial/antiviral that’s safe for them. I went through a really paranoid phase when Hailey was much younger when I was so afraid of her getting sick that I actually put some of her plastic toys in her Avent bottle sterilizer… little did I know that it would all melt to a pile of plastic, and that there were batteries inside! (so do I win the germophobe contest!)
June 26, 2007 at 6:07 pm #38023AnonymousInactiveLori, you crack me up!!! Well, yesterday I accidentally used Febreeze instead of Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface cleaner on Amelia’s favorite toy that she puts in her mouth ! The bottles are the same color! That is what is prompting my paranoia! I of course called poison control… they said she may have an upset stomach or vomit… needless to say, I couldn’t tell the difference from her reflux!
Tiffany, I would LOVE to have one of those sanitizers… I think my husband may think I’ve REALLY gone overboard with my phobia if I get one !!!
I am afraid of using regular Clorox wipes… I am a little concerned about using these sanitizers that say they are safe for children. It seems as though the one that Pampers makes may be the safest I’ve seen as it’s made from corn. Of course, I haven’t used anything organic. If anyone uses an organic sanitizer, I’d love to hear from you!
Thanks, all, for helping me with my germophobia!!!!
June 27, 2007 at 12:47 pm #38104AnonymousInactiveI have been worried about germs more lately too and am becoming paranoid, because I hate when Caden gets sick! It makes his reflux come back, and he is just so inconsolable and cranky. Who could blame us for wanting to avoid that, right?
Thanks for the ideas. I think I may try the vinegar/water idea today. I babysit a little boy now, and he seems to be sick all the time
June 28, 2007 at 5:40 am #38180AnonymousInactiveI’m the absolute oppostite to a germophobe now Alana goes to daycare. I figure anything I do at home won’t make a difference when she has all those kids at daycare to share germs with. Prior to that I just used hot soapy water.
June 28, 2007 at 5:20 pm #38219AnonymousInactiveI did find out that putting toys in the freezer will only make the germs go dormant, not kill them. Also, I found out that the toys that say “surface wash only” are usually because they have a squeaker or crinkly material and washing them in the washing machine may ruin those parts.
I am often criticized for being so paranoid about germs… like you, Emily, I just don’t want Amelia to get sick!
