As I read more and more posts around here I’m becoming concerned that neither our pediatrician nor our pedi GI have actually tested my son for reflux. He has silent reflux, so there’s no spitting up… and he hasn’t had any weight gain issues. He’s just miserable. I’m wondering if they haven’t tested because they’re not really concerned medically? But shouldn’t he at least have a UGI done to check and make sure there’s no underlying cause for the reflux?
Should I push for testing or is there really no need for it if the medication works?
June 19, 2007 at 3:49 pm #37228AnonymousInactiveNot all babies with reflux actually show it on an UGI, so I probably wouldn’t push for it if they are all sure that he has it. Cooper had one and well his was so bad that it showed up as Severe on the UGI but most babies with reflux don’t show anything on an UGI, it would however show if he has pyloric stenosis and if you are concerned about that then I would push for the UGI, but if not, just go with the knowledge that you are doing everything else possible to make your baby pain free and happy.
June 19, 2007 at 3:51 pm #37229AnonymousInactivemy son was not tested. it was obvious with his symptoms that he had silent reflux. i wouldnt have wanted test done, anyway. but thats just me. a lot of the time they do upper gi’s which arent even accurate at diagnosing reflux. if the baby doesnt reflux at that partciular time, then reflux is ruled out. there have been several babies here with SEVERE reflux that were told did not even have reflux. nataliachick72007-6-19 15:52:40
June 19, 2007 at 8:42 pm #37284AnonymousInactiveThey do the upper GI to rule out some sort of structural abnormality. I believe that it’s a bigger concern when a baby is a big spitter. I don’t think that they do them as often with a silent refluxer, so I wouldn’t worry about it at all!
June 19, 2007 at 9:09 pm #37294AnonymousInactiveMy first refluxer (silent) was not tested either. And my son was treated before being tested. The Upper GI they did on him was mainly due to the fact that he was throwing up so much the doc wanted to rule out pyloric stenosis. It’s not a very good test for reflux because the baby may not reflux much or at all during the test, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have reflux. It’s such a small window of time that they are catching. My son threw up all day almost every day and he was in so much pain that he was figthing every feeding, and yet the stupid test showed only mild to moderate reflux.

Hopefully your new meds will kick in soon (Personally I would also start with the 7.5 mg 2 x a day…..which some babies have been on and done quite well with). If not and you are still concerned then you could have another chat to the Dr and see what they think about testing?
