Brandon got Bronchiolitis caused by RSV about 3 weeks ago. He started having mild coughs and fever along with a major decrease in formula intake to only 8oz/day. I didn’t know that he had RSV at the beginning, but due to his low intake, I was worry that he will be dehydrated. So I brought him to the Children’s hospital. They admitted him, but didn’t give him any medication during his hospital stay because this is just a viral infection. They gave him IV to prevent him being dehyrated and also watched for his oxigen level. Since Brandon was only 2 months old, they had to help removing mucus from his airway. Brandon stayed in the hospital for 5 days and lost 8oz in 3 weeks.
Brandon didn’t want to drink much for 2 weeks. I was going crazy worrying that he has bottle aversion. However, for the past week, he’s been back to having 22oz/day.
Laura, I would say that make sure Owen gets the fluids that he needs for now. Don’t worry too much about his appetite. It’s normal that their appetite decreases when they can’t breath well. Wheezing is normal for Bronchiolitus. The doctor told me that Brandon could be wheezing and coughing for few weeks after the peak of this virus.
As long as Owen is well hydrated and doesn’t have high temperature, then it should be fine. If he starts doing high fever, then you must bring him to the hospital for X-ray.
