I am so curious about this. Will you please share your victory stories with me? We had a great week (even with teething ) and he is down to spitting up maybe 2 times a day this week. I am being really optimistic and feeling the end is near but i know better.
Sarah, it’s great when the good weeks start coming, and then they come in succession and it’s the best thing ever.
I don’t really have a good answer to your question. Every time we have a run of good weeks and I think, hmm, maybe we can start weaning off the meds, things get rough again. I wonder if it’s more of a back and forth process than a clear cut end.
I think that Tiffany’s right. It really is a back and forth process. In our case, we all of sudden realized that it had been several weeks since she’d had a reflux episode. So, we started cutting back on her prevacid very slowly. She’s now down to only 7.5 mg a day, and she’s only had a few times in recent memory when she’s had incidents that seemed like they could be reflux related. They could just have easily have been teething related. But, we’ve been waiting a little longer to cut the prevacid all together, just in case. I think that you get so used to reflux being an issue, that it takes forever for you to really believe that it’s actually gone.
It was tough for us to know for sure too. I would allow several months of the improved behavior before reducing or weaning the medicine. We saw Hailey’s first improvements at 9-10 months when she completely stopped spitting up. I didn’t wean her from Prevacid until she was over a year and we’d had several good months in a row.
we realized that jonah didn’t have any med increases- and this was a baby that needed med increases often, with every weight gain…so we tried cutting back on meds at 9months and it was a no-go, so we forgot about it for awhile…
I second Laura’s comment about baby just getting happier. Nathan’s reflux was well controlled with Zantac until he was 6 months old. Then he got very grumpy, even after adding the PPI (I think he dose was never high enough). Overall he’s been getting so much better lately (though teething has made it worse again in recent days). I was looking at a picture of him smiling ear-to-ear at 5 months old, and I just told my family that I feel like I have my happy baby back!!!!!
