Our son will be 2 on the 26th and we have slowly been weaning down his Prevacid Solutab dose. He used to be on 30mg a day given in two doses, but we are now down to one dose of 7.5mg per day. We have also started a milk trial, and so far so good. This is day 7 on the 7.5mg dose and day 3 of the milk trial and so far no reaction from either. I’m very elated, but also a little nervous because we have tried and failed with this many times before. Can it be that he has finally outgrown GERD and his milk protein intolerance? I really hope so. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything continues to be great!
Thanks,
Karen

good luck!

That’s a good point. Usually he has different reactions with the two. With the medicine, his reaction would be bad breath or spitting up. With the milk, it would be eczema or looser stools. So far, we’ve had no reactions at all.

I think we probably could take him off but it seems like that small dose keeps the real bad acid at bay. I haven’t done a whole milk trial yet but I did get him on milk based formula. I think your son is just ready. For some babies the age is two for all this to start to change. I wish you the best of luck. Keep us updated.

April 28, 2007 at 1:58 pm #31697AnonymousInactiveI wanted to update since it has been a week since I first posted. Our son is still doing extremely well and we are getting ready to stop the Prevacid tomorrow. He has had absolutely no symptoms and we are ecstatic. It has been a looooooooooong 2 years and we are keeping our fingers crossed that he has outgrown his reflux and milk protien allergy for good. Thank you so much for your comments and support. They are greatly appreciated!

He has been doing well on milk for about 3 weeks, also, but just today he had a loose, black frothy bowel movement. Before that he had a couple green bowel movements and two loose stools, but I thought it was too much birthday cake wreaking havoc on his digestive system. Could he be having a reaction to the milk after 3 weeks? I thought it would have shown up sooner.
May 4, 2007 at 2:31 pm #32217AnonymousInactiveMaybe.. i’ve heard it can take 2 weeks for the proteins to build up, so 3 weeks doesn’t sound too far off that, especially if the black stools were preceded by green ones…
Not sure what I would do. Maybe give it another day or so and see what happens.. sometimes they just have crazy poo, you know?

It took 2 weeks before I was convinced she was reacting to normal formula when we did a trial. So it could be the milk. I agree with Naomi, give it a day or to and if it keeps happening without any sign of illness (eg vomitting, fever) I would probably go off the milk and see what happens.
Great news about the meds free!
May 5, 2007 at 11:36 am #32284AnonymousInactiveWell, we think it was a reaction to some wheat germ I put in his food yesterday to boost his calorie intake. He had a normal bowel movement today, so we’re going to continue with milk and not with wheat germ. Does anyone have a child with celiac disease or gluten intolerance? We are thinking of having our son tested again for it since he is a little older now. He was tested a year ago and it came back negative. germantownmom2007-5-5 11:36:30
