My daughter Keethu is 5 weeks old and has been diagnosed with LaryngoTracheoMalacia. It is very difficult to watch her go through the noisy breathing. In the last week she started to cry unconsolably around the same time at night. We distract and pacify her during the 2 hours. Her ped. says she is colic. Crying makes the breathing even more difficult. Could you please share your experience if your baby has either of these malacias and is colicky.
She frantically sucks the pacifier during these times, can pacifier cause any additional swelling of larynx?
Can a swollen larynx be diagnosed without having to go through another laryngoscopy? Are there any medications available to reduce the swelling?
Sorry for too many questions. I am feeling very helpless when she cries and goes through difficult breathing.

I have been waiting for some one else for the last month that is going through this also. My daughter was born 1/25/07 and @ 8 days old was diagnosised by sound only w/ tracheamalacia. at her 2 month check up the ped refered us to a pedatric palmonologist because she is so loud and her chest sink so far in when she breathes.
Ellie is currently set up for a Bronchoscopy( i think that is what is called) on April 26th to see how bad she is. At the ped pulm last monday he said she is on the more severe end. I’m not sur ewhat exactly that mean. I can relate very well with your worries over her breathing. My son born 10/7/04 also had this but his was very mild. He suffered from broncitis all the first 18 mnths of his life. I’m hoping she wont have it that much but am ready w/ my nebulizer.
So far Ellie has been put onto Zantac for reflux to help keep her airway from gettign agrivated and just was switched to prilocet (sp?) I really dont notice a difference with her breathing on any meds. Our best way to help her is keep her from crying. Ellie also had colic but seems to have grown out of it for the most part. She used to cry from 8 pm till midnight then sleep the whole night through. Now she doesnt cry as much but only sleeps 3-4 hrs at a time. She now sleeps on her belly per the ped pal and sounds better that way.
Ellie goes in on May 2nd for and upper gi to see how bad her reflux is. For now the ped palm only told us to let ehr sleep on her belly and give hre Priolcet. I guess we’ll find out more next week and see where to go from there.
Have you had any testing done? What have the dr’s told you? Please email me if you want to talk more one on one. I’m on aol im also…

Megan, sorry that you and Ellie went through this as well. Keethu was diagnosed with floppy larynx using a laryngoscopy test (camera via nostril). ENT who did the test could not see further than larynx, so confirmed only laryngomalacia. As her chest bend inwards during breathing, her Ped thinks she has tracheo as well. She arches her back after feeding, I mentioned it to her Ped and asked if she is a silent refluxer. Ped din’t seem to think so. Should I ask for a GI reference anyway? Hope everything goes well with Ellie in her next appointment.
Kim, Keethu has a high pitched breathing after a fussy night. Did you observe this in Alex as well? Sorry if this is a silly question, how did you find about the reflux by hearing?

I’m not sure exactly why our ped is sending Ellie for an upper gi when Jake had it two years ago he never had any test done. Is your daughter on any med s for reflux? my ped insist that even if its silent reflux she feels all babies w/ malacia should be treated for reflux because of the agrivation makes their beathing worse. My ped is through our childrens hosp here. She is who refreerd us to a ped pulm. Ellie saw an ENT @ 6 wks for a hearing check up and he didnt seem worried about her breathing since I told him the ped said it was malacia. I would talk to your ped about a referal to a pediatric pulmonologist. They are who specialize in breathing more then the ENT. The test Ellie is having done is at the hosp where they will put her to sleep and insteret the camera all teh way down to watch how tight her airway closes. That way we can figure out if she is one who will just outgrow it or if she may need surgry now.
Also Ellie has slight apnea caused by her malacia. Does your daughter seem to show anysings of apnea? Right now the ped pulm wasnt worried cause it was never more then 20 sec between breathes.
As for the crying Ellie only seemed to calm if I would lay down with her on my chest it was the only way for me to get any sleep. Nothing else worked for her. Has your dr said anything about havign her sleep on her stomach?I was so worried about SIDS but I think she might be at more risk on her back.

April 20, 2007 at 1:27 pm #31067AnonymousInactiveOh also how would you describe your daughter’s breathing? I’m tryign to gage how bad Ellies is. “on the more savere end” is all the ped pulm said. Ellie sounds just liek a candian goose honkign when she breathes in. She breathes very deep with gulping like breathes.
April 20, 2007 at 4:38 pm #31079AnonymousInactiveThanks Laura, I don’t have a carrier yet. I will certainly give it a try and post my response
Megan, my daughter has not shown any signs of apnea. This is something I am really worried, especially at night. Do you have an apnea monitor? Yes, we let Keethu sleep on our chest and then when she goes to a deep sleep her breathing is not noisy, then we lay her on back in her bassinett. Keethu grunts most of the time, when she is excited or cried she has a high pitched crowing sound. So far its just our Ped who categorized her as moderate breathing distress. I will ask for a Ped. Pulm. reference and get is assessed.

You could hear the reflux because you could hear and feel her burp and then swallow it back down. Or she would make this kind of glurping sound. She still does it when she’s having a bad night. When I’m holding her, I can actually feel her little body kind of spasm as she refluxes and then she gulps and swallows it back down.
