Just when I was about to post Johnny’s update on the “Hip Hip Hooray”, he rejects his bottle and throws up on solid again! 2 weeks ago when he was discharged from the German hospital, he was doing so well (taking 25-30oz of formula from the BOTTLE!) and continued eating well for about a week. And then for some unknown reason, he started to take less and less until today—he completely rejects his bottle again! I had no choice but went back to the painful spoon-feeding, and he vomited big time! I really don’t know what’s going on with him! He was referred to see the German GI specialist 3 weeks ago. I was hoping that the doctor would be able to prescribe Motilium or some safe medicine to stop him from vomiting. However, as soon as we saw the doctor (she is not a GI specialist at all, just a regular pedestrian), she told me that Motilium is no longer available in Germany, and they usually don’t give medication to babies with reflux. They are strong believers that diet (i.e. thickened formula or solid food) is the key. I wanted to go home since they couldn’t/wouldn’t prescribe any medicine to help Johnny’s excessive vomiting but was convinced to stay and worked with the experienced nurses to change Johnny’s terrible eating habit (exclusively spoon-fed with DVD on). On our second day in the hospital, both Johnny and I got very sick. We had severe stomach flu & was throwing up none stop! Johnny was on IV for 1.5 days and lost half of a pound (As a FTT, it was a big deal!). Miraculusly, during his recovery from the stomach flu, Johnny gradually took the bottle again. After a few days of trail and error, we finally found the formula that he would take the most. Surprisingly, it wasn’t any hypoallegic formula or none-milk base formula; it was just a regular German formula flavored with banana taste. Johnny loved it and did not vomit on it at all! Well, as said before, it lasted for only about one week & he slowly showed his dislike to the formula/bottle again. I suspected it might have something to do with Zantac and his weight gain. I increased his Zantac (2.1mlx2/day) dose & added Prevacid (7.5mgx2/day). It’s been 6 days, but things are just getting worse and worse. I know it takes some time for Prevacid to kick in, but I am so worried that Johnny may his hard-gained weight before then. I also have no idea if he will eat better even after Prevacid takes effects. It’s 5pm here and he has only had 5oz of formula (with force) so far. He cries when he is hungry but pushes the bottle away and falls asleep (dream-feeding doesn’t work on him either). He sleeps well and longer and shows no sign of fussiness. I really can’t figure him out! Any idea/suggestion will be highly appreciated? Urhhh…..why did my good days end so soon???!!! When will he outgrow this???!!!

Kaelyn always had a “honeymoon” period when we tried a new formula. Things would seem to be great for a few days or a week, and then they’d go back to the way things were before. Her ped and ped GI said that this is fairly common.
March 7, 2006 at 12:03 pm #3157AnonymousInactiveThat’s probably the only explanation I can find now. Things here are just gettig worse. Johnny starts to refuse being spoon-fed. I really don’t know what to do next except for screaming out loud!!!
March 7, 2006 at 1:09 pm #3165AnonymousInactiveAre you able to use mylanta or maalox until the prevacid is really working? It works in minutes and is a huge life and sanity saver! I hope they figure out what is going on soon!
March 7, 2006 at 2:57 pm #3183AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry to hear this… I hope it is reflux and the prevacid takes a bit fo time to kick in but he will be better soon!
You know, Matthew throws up his solids all of the time. He has learned how to do it. He starts gagging adn unless you get his attention immediately, he will continue until he throws up. BUT the ped said that if he does that, we give him the whole feeding again… and i think he is learning because he is throwing up less these days…

It’s so hard when they don’t eat- I know this firsthand as Hailey is awful in terms of eating and takes no solids! I know it doesn’t sound like a good thing, but it really is good that he’ll take things from a spoon- you can always wean from a bottle, but it’s hard when they won’t let you feed them anything (like my dd). I really hope he starts eating well once the meds kick in. Hang in there.
Thais, when Matthew vomits something up and your ped says to “give him the whole feeding again”, does he willingly open his mouth to take it? Just wondering how you get him to eat? Hailey won’t open her mouth for a spoon at all. (I don’t want to hijack, so if it’s too off topic, could you reply for me in another post).
Sending hugs and good feeding vibes…

Last couple of weeks, matthew has been opening his mouth! Not really to eat, i don´t think (i am told so, as i am trying to be away for his feedings). He needs about one hour and a ton of distraction and soemtimes it requires putting the pacifier in and then taking it out etc etc and giving him some water in between bites… he is really not hungry but i think he knows that they will sit there for an hour so he jsut opens it!
March 7, 2006 at 4:16 pm #3200AnonymousInactiveThank you all for the information. I always feel better coming here and knowing that I am not alone & that I can always count on you for support.
Sarah, I do give Johnny Mylanta and it does help when he starts to act fussy. He never seems to be really in pain though & that’s why my husband always thinks Johnny is fine and I am worried about too much.
Thais, Johnny’s solid throw-up is exactly like Matthew’s. I do think sometimes he throws up voluntarily (has little to do with reflux) when he wants to quit or doesn’t like the food. That’s why I am always afraid to make him try new food because if he doesn’t like it, he would just bring up everything he takes before. I think he really need a good feeding speclist to help him learn about eating and food.
Lori, I hope Hailey is eating better now. I tell myself all the time that I must be out of my mind trying so hard to get Johnny eat and am always obsessed by how much (or rather, how little) he eats. Life with a refluxer is really driving me crazy!
