InactiveWould reflux cause a baby told hold stomach contents?
I posted about this on another forum before I found this one but didnt really get any help so here are my two post there.

My cousins 10 month old son is having a problem and the doctors dont know what it is yet. They are wanting to admit him on the 21st at 7 am for all day and over night observation.
Since he was about a month old he randomly stops breathing and his eyes become large with fright. When he is finally able to breath, he screams because it scares him so bad. Also, when he eats, its as if he is not digesting the food and it comes back up about 3-4 hours later.
They have already ruled out reflux with upper GI’s and they dont feel that its asthma either.
He was born a little early because he stopped growing 4 weeks before his due date and when she went for a U/S at 38 1/2 weeks her fluid was too low. He was born at 5# 2oz but even with all the throwing up, he is gaining weight and is finally at the 50th %tile
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? The doctors dont have a clue and my counsin is very scared.
The thing he is doing at night sounds like Brielle with her reflux so what else can it be?

My cousins 11 month old son has been going for testing at the childrens hospital in Columbia SC off and on for over a month now. Now they are saying that his stomach is holding 56% of its contents and not digesting properly. They want to put him to sleep on the 26th and take biopsies of his esophagus and stomach. Then based on those findings do possable major surgery. I almost want to drive the three hours to pick her up and bring her here for a second oppinion. She called last night in tears. I dont think I could let them do anything like that on Brielle.
Any ideas ladies?
April 11, 2007 at 5:30 pm #30117Inactivean upper GI cannot rule out reflux——an upper gi is actually pretty worthless as a diagnostic test for reflux, it is really done to rule out abnormalities in the upper GI tract——and even then, it won’t catch everything.
it sounds like he could have delayed gastric emptying, which would explain why he spits up 3 or 4 hours after eating. some babies will spit up hours after eating even without having delayed gastric emptying.
sounds like they plan on doing a scope with biopsies, which is a pretty good idea, but i wouldn’t recommend letting them do surgery without also doing a ph probe and without trying a PPI first. there are a number of things that can be done before doing surgery.
sylvia spit up all day long—but the times that she spit up and it went up the back of her throat into her nose, she would become hysterical.
how long does your cousin’s baby stop breathing? if it is only for a few seconds it definitely sounds like it could be caused by reflux.
April 11, 2007 at 5:37 pm #30119InactiveI second everything that Christine said. Also, Hailey would do the exact thing that you’re describing. It turns out that she was choking on reflux, and that would cause the apnea as well as the bug-eyed look, followed by mass hysteria.

Her son stops breathing for just a few seconds and then becomes histarical.
Brielles Reflux was diagnosed with an upper GI only.

yep, upper Gi;s are pretty worthless. there are lots of babies that get the test done and the doctor concludes that there is no reflux, when there actually is.
also, the names in her sig are her children.

April 11, 2007 at 9:34 pm #30158Inactivei have 2 step-children, also. i grew up with 4 sisters, 1 brother, 6 step-sisters, a step-brother—-plus, at my dad’s house i had a half-sister.
sylvia had a hiatal hernia that did not show up with 2 upper GIs and an endoscopy—-but that was probably on the unusual side, and she has had the surgery that your cousin’s docs are talking about——if they have not even tried her son on a PPI and his weight is good—-chances are he will not end up with surgery. when they stop breathing for a few seconds with reflux it can be REALLY scary, but i don’t think it is dangerous—-unless they are aspirating.

Sorry about Sylvia and the problems you had with the others
They just put him on a PPI and something else, but I cant remember the name of it. I hope it works
