Has anyone seen their baby/child purposely gag him/herself? Lately Bryce has been putting his fingers in his mouth and gagging himself constantly – and I swear he’s doing it on purpose! It happens most when we’re tube-feeding him – maybe because he’s not busy doing something. I’ve tried distracting him with toys, but he usually just tosses them aside and starts the gagging again. He doesn’t seem to understand “no no!”.
Any ideas to why he would be doing this?

He must be conscious of it all the time and when he’s upset about something his tolerance for the discomfort diminishes and he sticks his fingers in his mouth and gags.
Does Bryce dislike his tube feeding sessions?
Could he be teething? Or maybe a sore or scratchy throat?
I love his new picture.

April 11, 2007 at 1:28 pm #30080AnonymousInactiveSorry I don’t have much input, but I remember reading a post about this recently:

Hope you find the answer, and solution, soon! Love the new picture as well!

April 11, 2007 at 2:56 pm #30094AnonymousInactiveKaelyn did it for a while too. That was when we ended up putting her back on the zantac because we were pretty sure that it was related to reflux. She kept saying that it hurt (her throat) and she was trying to make it better.

I hope that’s not the case with Bryce, hopefully it’s just his teeth and it will pass. Is he vomiting from the gagging?
April 11, 2007 at 5:39 pm #30122AnonymousInactiveHailey sucks her fingers all the time, but moreso when teething or bothered by reflux. Sometimes she’ll gag herself by mistake. It’s possible he’s doing it for attention. Is it possible that the tube feeds cause him to reflux?
I also LOVE the new pic BTW!
April 11, 2007 at 6:03 pm #30132AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone! My mom gave the boys new hats for Easter, so we got some cute pics.
Teething. Of course. It definitely could be teeth. I’m pretty positive he’s not doing it for attention, and I don’t think it’s directly to do with his tube-feeds. Maybe I’ll give him some Tylenol and see if that makes a difference. It also could be a sore throat. I know his ears have still been bothering him a little.
Ugh. We just really needed one more thing to add to the mix right now.
Bryce is my third child, but I sure feel like a first-time mom with him most of the time!
April 11, 2007 at 10:17 pm #30165AnonymousInactivehe might be doing it on purpose. it may be that he has learned a new trick and is doing it over and over again—-but i’d mention it to the doc.
April 11, 2007 at 11:05 pm #30170AnonymousInactiveOur speech theraipist told us that when we do tube feeding to put a pacifier or our fingers in kendra’s mouth soo she can relate mouth movement with tummy being full. now Bryce is older, so i am not sure what will work for him. maybe he can have a small snack he really likes (so he won’t gag on that)to give his mouth some movement so he won’t do that? just an idea.
iam sorry i do not know all about Bryces progress, but has he had an edoscopy before? iam asking b/c i read that some children with esophagatis (sp?) put their fingers in their mouth and make themselves gag. i don’t want to scare of anyhthing, maybe too much info. i hope that gets better soon!
April 12, 2007 at 1:11 am #30181AnonymousInactiveChristine – yes, it does kind of seem that way.. like he’s learned a new trick and keeps doing it, but it also seems like he’s kind of chewing on his fingers, so it could just be teething. It’s so hard to tell. I guess I’ll just keep and eye on him and see what happens, and I’ll mention it to our doctor.
Leo – Thanks for the ideas. When Bryce was younger we did what you suggested and always kept him sucking on something while we tube fed him, but now that he’s older he’s lost all desire to suck. We can’t let him eat anything while he’s tube feeding because he gags and spits up everything. (Not that it’s any better with him gagging himself!) Bryce hasn’t ever had an endoscopy…. I’ll definitely keep that in mind if it continues.
