We had a terrible night. First our horrible baby monitor went haywire at 1am. Then, David woke up screaming in pain at 3am and continued to cry in his very light sleep every hour until 6:30am. David’s been in pain all day! Fussing, arching his back and wimpering! I feel so bad for the little guy. I have been looking forward to a nap since we got up, but needless to say David is refusing to nap while his brother naps! My head is pounding and I’m physically and mentally exhausted.
We finally got an appointment to see a ped GI on Monday. I really hope he puts David on better medication because the Zantac has stopped working effectively.
Thanks for listening! I need to go make a pot of coffee!!!!

March 3, 2006 at 4:02 pm #2962AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry that you are having a bad day. Sending hugs your way! March 3, 2006 at 4:31 pm #2963AnonymousInactiveForget the coffee and go for the beer!!! JK!!
Sorry, Boy I tell ya, if I had a dollar for every day I spent with my son like that. I feel your pain!
Things to keep in mind about reflux meds
- PPIs (Prevacid and Prilosec-shut off acid pumps) tend to work way better for little babies
- Babies/children have higher metabolisms than adults, so they need higher doses of meds
- Babies/children need to have multiple doses a day to be effective, because they wear off so quickly
- I would suggest the PPI in the morning and a H2Blocker (Zantac-acid blocker) in the evening. Some moms think the Prevacid causes the sleeplessness at night. My son has been on this combo now for a month and he’s never slept so good at night. I wish I would have known about it when he was a newborn!
- In case of an emergency and you think the meds aren’t high enough, try a little Mylanta (I usually used the same dose for mylanta that I used for tylenol)

March 3, 2006 at 4:44 pm #2965AnonymousInactiveSorry you are having a bad day. I’m with Marsha, we use the Mylanta along with the Prevacid when Zach is having a tough day. I will say, we have not had to do that in some time!!! Hopefully after your appt on Monday, you will have your little guy on the right meds and things will start looking up. Just remember, the PPI’s tend to take some time to “kick in” so you may need to continue to use the Zantac until that happens. It was day 11 for us and we had a completely different baby. Sending hugs your way!!!! Good luck!
March 3, 2006 at 4:52 pm #2967AnonymousInactiveThanks for the encouragement, advice and information.. I’ve heard a lot of good things about prevacid and I was planning on speaking the the ped GI about it on Monday. I’ll also talk to him about the combination of Zantac with a PPI.
I’ve heard about giving Mylanta, but have not known how much to give him. I’ll also talk to him about that too! Boy do I have a list of things to discuss!
Let’s pray for a good weekend! At least my husband will be home to help and keep me sane!!!!
March 4, 2006 at 9:49 am #3014AnonymousInactiveWe were told by our regular ped to use mylanta so maybe you can call the regular ped and inquire about it. That was the only thing that kept me sane during the zantac days and the ppi waiting period. I hope the ped gi appt goes well!
March 4, 2006 at 5:11 pm #3034AnonymousInactiveI am sorry that things are hard right now. I hope your ped Gi can help the situation. I agree that Mylanta can be very helpful in the meantime. I also had a lot of luck with Colicalm Gripe water–but my son was more MSPI than reflux. Emmy2006-3-4 17:12:58
March 5, 2006 at 12:27 pm #3069AnonymousInactiveSarah,
I noticed your son is on Nutramigen. How is it working for Isaac? What formula were you using before Nutramigen?
I have David’s 4 month checkup on Tuesday, so I’ll ask the pediatrician about the mylanta.
Thanks,
Melissa
March 5, 2006 at 2:15 pm #3077AnonymousInactiveBefore the nutramigen he was on enfamil (regular), enfamil ar, and enfamil prosobee. It works really well for him. We noticed a difference the second day he used it. By the end of the week he didn’t cry as much at all (still cried due to uncontrolled reflux at the time). What kind of formula are you using?
March 5, 2006 at 9:11 pm #3086AnonymousInactiveWe’re using the Enfamil Gentlease. We were originally using the Good Start, but switched to the Gentlease. I’m not sold on it though. When I speak with the ped GI tomorrow, I’m going to ask him about his formula. Througout the day, on top of the acid reflux, he’s squirming and arching his back and needs to be burped. Is this part of the acid reflux, needing to be burped all day long? I burp him after every two ounces and it still seems like it isn’t enough. Along with burping, I add the gas drops to every bottle. I never had this problem with my first son. He took his formula with no problems. After I burped him when he was finished with his bottle, that was it!
I feel like I am at a loss with David. I keep telling myself this is temporary. This website has been wonderful!
Thanks for listening and your advise.
Melissa
