Hello I have a question concerning my non reflux child, you all have been so helpful with my daughters reflux I thaught you might have some good advice on my sons ear infection.
My son is almost 2 and has never had an ear infection before. Last month he was running a fever, snotty nose, etc. so I took him to the Dr. he had Strep and a Ear Infection, so the ped put him on amoxicillan for 10 days. On the last day of his amoxicillan, he was running a fever and just lying around wouldn’t eat or drink, and of course it was sunday night and there was no Dr. office open so we went to the ER. They said he still had a middle ear infection and gave him a shot of rocephin and told us to follow up with his ped. So on the following wed. we went back to the ped and his ear infection was still there so they put him on omnicef for 10 days. He went yesterday for his 2 wk followup on the ear infection and its still there. So now he is on a stronger form of amoxicillan than before, 1200mg/day.
I am worried that 1 this is way to much antibotics for him to take, and 2 why isn’t the infection going away?
Any advice? Suggestions?

Sometimes ear infections can be viral. My dad actually had one that was viral and lasted for months. I hope it’s not viral in your son’s case but I wanted to mention that because it is a possibilty.

My son we actually went and saw an ENT and she had him stay on a low dose of amoxicillan (when the ear infection was gone) until the summer when there was not that much pollen. She also told me (as my son was about your son’s age when he started ear infections) that for some kids at the age of 2 for some reason ear infections stop….not saying that he would never get one, but they do not occur as often. So I would say, just hang in there and just give him any of the meds the ped tells you to give him and if the ped feels that the meds are not working then they will probably send you to an ENT to have them look at it.
Now, with my daughter, she had her first ear infection at 10 weeks of age. Needless to say, by 7 mons she had tubes put in and they have been great. She has only had a handful of infections since then.
But the next time you go in to have his ears check ask about what the ped thinks is the reason for the infection not going away so soon. And at times too, it may take a few rounds of antibiotics to get rid of an infection. There has been a lot of different viruses that have been going around, so he may have that too, which antibiotics (I am sure you know) will not cure a virus.
