Ok, Aidan was doing just fine, and still seems ok, but right after the pollen started to flow, his nose started to run (not suprised by that), but it slowly turned from clear to the occasional nasty yellow color. He’s completely stuffed up, and Claritin is doing nothing for him. The issue is, he’s been to the Dr. so much that honestly I’m hesitant to take him in again. He’s already resistant to so many antibiotics, and I don’t want them to start him on the antibiotic merry-go-round again.
I have FLoxin drops that I use to help preventg ear infections, but I’m wondering if anyone knows ANY way, homeopathic, OTC, old school remedy, ANYTHING!!!! that helps with environmental allergies..he takes nasonex too, but that also does nothing, and doesn’t even get a chance to work when his nose is completely clogged.-Also, I don’t really want to give him benadryl every day until spring ends!!!!!
Ugh. I love Georgia, and spring here is beautiful BUT the first few weeks of pollen are just not fun. Hopefully it’ll pass quickly and we’ll be able to enjoy the rest of spring!!!

Her allergist also said that we could try nasonex if the allegra didn’t work. I’ve also found that regular saline spray seems to help. She thinks it’s fun to squirt it herself. She especially likes it if I let her spray me as well.

I have allergies and asthma too. They have some homeopathic tablets in the health food stores for allergies that you might could try. I tried them once, and didn’t see much difference, but it might be worth a try. Also, I read a website that had a lot of suggestions. Haven’t tried any of them myself yet:
Natural Remedies for Allergies
Butterbur:
Butterbur is another name for petasites, a shrub with huge leaves. The
plant is toxic but some studies show butterbur is effective in treating
allergy symptoms.Quercetin:
An herbal supplement that has been shown to reduce sinus pain and
congestion. Bassett said vitamin C actually may improve the
effectiveness by reducing inflammation. One problem, says Bassett, is
it is unclear how much you need to take, so you may have to experiment.Homeopathic Nasal Mists:
Saline and salt water sprays help wash away the pollen from the nose,
which can remove the problem and reduce the need for medication. Plus,
they are inexpensive.Antioxidant Fruits and Vegetables:
Grape seed extract, which can be found in vitamin or health food
stores, has been shown effective. But in your own refrigerator, apples,
bananas and onions have anti-inflammatory properties and help to build
up your immune system. Some foods, including apples in some people, cross-react with tree
pollen and will cause allergy symptoms. Some of those foods include
pears, kiwi, cherries, peaches, nectarines, celery, carrots, parsley,
peppers and nuts like hazlenuts, walnuts, and almonds.Omega-3 Fatty Acids: A
German study found that people who ate foods high in Omega-3 fatty acid
— like salmon, tuna and walnuts — had the fewest allergies. You can eat
these foods and get supplements at the health food stores.Hope you can find something that helps him feel better!!

They also help the GI work better, so they are less miserable (sleep and eat better). When they are less miserable they have a better chance at having a good immune system. Think about how easier for you to get sick when you don’t get enough sleep .

March 30, 2007 at 6:26 pm #29098AnonymousInactiveI just started both the boys back on probiotics a few days ago! And the singulair would be a good idea if the dr would give it to him! She(his ped) told me that the only thing I could give him was claritin, and the nasonex. Luckily I called his ENT who wanted to see him on Wed. but we’re going to be out of town next week, so he’s going in the Monday we get back…I’m wondering if I should have taken the Wed. appt. But this trip has been planned forever and the whole family’s going…
Anyway, that advice on food causeing allergy symptoms is interesting, Aidan eats apples and pears all the time. I think I’ll stop giving those to him. He loves blueberries (actually anything ending in “berry” LOL). I just found out (the hard way of course) that he can’t eat citrus fruit.
Oh, and we do saline hmm every hour it seems-lol, I keep saying we should buy stock in little noses…my fear is that the strange bacteria that the ENT found in his nose a while ago (I think I talked about that in a diff post) is back. I swear I am going to walk in and look the ent in the eye and say. ok adnoids and tonsils, out they go. Maybe I can get a 2 for one, my older son has severe asthma and moderate enlarged adnoids too, and has been miserable every spring since he turned 2!!!
Thank you guys so much for the awesome advice, this board is more helpful than their ped. most of the time!!!
March 30, 2007 at 7:02 pm #29099AnonymousInactiveFYI: In one of the allergy books I have, the author reports many people, esp children, can not eat raw fruits in the spring when pollen counts are up. They can eat cooked fruits, and return to raw fruits after the allergy season is over. Sometimes termed “oral mouth syndrome.” This info goes in line with the info Heather posted.
Reidun has a really runny nose lately. I think she might be doomed to spring allergies as well.
