Hello everyone,
I last posted in early February saying that Gabby wasn’t eating well. We got her dose increase to 22.5mg and it seemed to go better for a bit. Now we are headed back in the wrong direction. Bottles are going a little better, but solids are going awful.
Bottles are going better because she only takes 3 a day at 6.5 to 7 oz per feeding. They are all when she’s really relaxed first thing in the morning, before her mid-afternoon nap, and before bed. She also takes 2 – 3 oz in a sippy cup during her solids. But the sippy is all she wants during solids time now. She arches her back and groans when I give her cereal, veggies, or fruit.
Solids started great! She loved cereal and when she was having a little trouble with the bottle, I’d dump it in the cereal and she’d scarf it down. We started veggies at the end of five months and things looked ok until two weeks later when she was having trouble with her bottle. Hindsight , I see the correlation, but at the time I did not. But at that time, she ate solids just fine. She’d take down a 1/4 cup of cereal and a whole 1st foods once a day and at seven months we moved it up to twice daily and 1/2 – 2/3 gerber second foods. Things were fine with solids until I started fruits. Then there was back arching, groaning, wanting to stop after two bites. I took fruits out and started retrialing veggies to no avail. I still give her 2 TBSP cereal and a little veggies each day, but she gets upset quickly.
She definitely IS teething. She has a bump on her lower gums and this will be her first tooth. I know this causes reflux to flare. But I’m thinking it’s more the food. We have an appt with the GI I don’t like on Tuesday the 27th. She’s all I could get into quickly. I have an appt at the children’s hospital GI clinic on April 17th. I’m thinking they are going to do an endoscopy but at this point, I’m thinking it’ll be a good idea. I’ve been afraid of it for so long, but I really do want to know what’s going on with her.
And now to top it all off, there was a little bit of blood in her diaper this morning. She had a harder stool, followed by looser (sorry to get graphic) and when I was folding up the diaper the harder part moved and left a small streak of blood. I’ve never ever noticed this before and that’s why I’ve always doubted she had trouble with the formula. But now it’s here and I don’t know if it’s the formula or the food. So, anyone have any ideas for me? Just when I thought I had things figured out, this throws me for a loop.

March 22, 2007 at 11:46 am #28184AnonymousInactiveIs it rice cereal? Hunter LOVED the rice cereal, but that is the first time I saw blood in his stools. The GI told me to stop it immediately, that it was basically shredding his intestines. He isn’t allergic, just intolerant of it (see my post yesterday under MSPI). Have you tried Oatmeal? Del Monte has a soy free Oatmeal, if there is a MSPI suspected.
Hope this helps….

March 22, 2007 at 1:51 pm #28201AnonymousInactiveI have heard about hard stools sometimes causing tears as well…that could be what the blood is. Maybe try a different type of cereal to see if that helps. I know rice cereal can cause problems in a lot of babies. I hope Gabby is doing better soon.
