DS is on Gentlease and breastmilk, and taking prevacid. His BM’s are pretty infrequent, and save for one incident, very loose and normal looking. Sometimes they will be more yellow if he has had more breastmilk than formula that day. But it seems like they are getting worse smelling, like sulpher! Is this the formula, or the prevacid? I don’t remember my older son’s poo being this offending!
Sorry if this is a dumb question!!!

March 1, 2007 at 5:40 pm #26264AnonymousInactiveso can they be constipated, without having actual firm poo? Does it just sit in there because the little muscles don’t really know what to do? My physical therapist wondered if its just because his whole little body is so tense he is clenching his little bum.

March 1, 2007 at 5:44 pm #26266AnonymousInactiveMy first daughter was always grunting and straining to poo, and when she finally did, it was mushy and soft. Our ped said that she was learning to poop. (I didn’t know you had to learn it, but apparently, some babies take longer to figure out how to co-ordinate their bum muscles, and their pushing to get the poop out)
March 1, 2007 at 5:50 pm #26269AnonymousInactiveCould also be an intolerance. Is there any mucous?
March 1, 2007 at 7:11 pm #26275AnonymousInactiveI don’t think so, but I’m not sure what that would look like? Like someone actually blew their nose in the diaper? It is pretty green most the time so I guess I’d have to really look. Or is it something you just can’t miss??
He has really bad baby acne on his face and neck, and just a sprinkling on his arms. Cortizone is helping but it seems to creep back if I don’t keep it on him everyday. Should I look into this more?
I am changing pedi’s, so if anyone lives in the austin area, let me know if you like yours!

March 1, 2007 at 8:49 pm #26282AnonymousInactiveCortizone should be used sparingly and for short periods of time….like twice a day for a few days at a time. This is what my doctor told me. It can cause thinning of the skin if it’s used too much.
Are you sure it’s infant acne and not eczema? If it’s on his arms too I’m be suspcious that it may be eczema. My children all got eczema from dairy for the first 9 months or so. I’d ask the doctor to look at his rash just in case. He should be due for a two month check up soon, right?
Mucous in the stool can look like little white strings or threads. Do you see anything like that?
March 1, 2007 at 8:54 pm #26283AnonymousInactiveall of the hypoallgenic formulas gave my son really stinky dark poo until his body got used to it, then the smell got better.
neocate poops are the smelliest and they are so dark green they look black!!ewwwMarch 1, 2007 at 9:48 pm #26306AnonymousInactiveI’m not familiar with Gentle ease but Alana’s poos were always runny, smelly and dark green on Pepti-junior. Now with solids they are a whole new smorgasboard of smell. Might be the gentle ease???
March 1, 2007 at 9:57 pm #26308AnonymousInactiveI have heard that about cortisone, but the dr didn’t say anything about it. she said that if it was an allergy, it would be all over his body. at that time it wasn’t on his arms yet. she said that the neck rash was heat rash. i don’t really know what to think anymore about the dr though, i am so mad…
the stuff on his face is really rough and red in places, like sandpaper. on his neck and arms looks more like a sprinkling of red dots
i haven’t seen any stringy stuff in the poo. i will look in the next diaper. could an allergy take time to become “visable” ?

March 2, 2007 at 10:25 am #26338AnonymousInactiveMy babies only had eczema on their faces and a tiny bit on their arms. It had two different appearances; Dry, slightly raised, red patches (usually on the face) and tiny, pimple like little bumps (usually on the arms).
March 2, 2007 at 12:14 pm #26355AnonymousInactiveThat sounds like DS’s skin. I looked last night a bit closer at his whole body. The pimple type things are starting to spread over his tummy and outer thighs, but not bad, about like on his arms. The face stuff is creeping back since I help off on the cortisone just to see what would happen…
I also looked at his poo ( since he FINALLY went ) and it was still stinky and green. There wasn’t any white strings, but rather clearish/green globs of jello type stuff. It was kinda stringy if I ran a q-tip through it ( my Dh would be so mortified to know I was examining poo that closely… )
Is this normal mucous or should there even be any?
Thanks!!
Tina
March 2, 2007 at 12:37 pm #26356AnonymousInactiveOh, we all examine poo here!
I’m not sure about the mucous. Fortunately my babies didn’t have that problem….but it does sound like mucous from your description.
As for the eczema, it could be due to dairy. I had to eliminate dairy while nursing and supplement with soy for all three of my babies. The doctor told me that for some babies it’s both dairy and wheat that causes the eczema outbreaks.
One thing I noticed early on with all of them is that soaps tended to make things worse. I started bathing them with Dove Unscented (the bar, not the liquid body soap) and switched to free and clear laundry soaps. Also, if you’re using Fabric Softner, you may want to stop….my doc says it’s a big irritant for kids who are prone to eczema.
March 2, 2007 at 2:31 pm #26373AnonymousInactiveI agree about the fabric softener. Brianna got a terrible breakout from just washing one load with a baby dryer sheet! We started using Aveeno lotion (the one with the navy blue cap) and that has worked like a charm. We even use it in her bath now (the bath lotion that is.) It does sound like it could be an intolerance of some sort.
March 2, 2007 at 3:39 pm #26391AnonymousInactiveMy son’s poos are sometimes as you describe. They really were when he was sick with a virus (RSV), and it took almost a month for them to go back to normal, as he also had to take antibiotics for an ear infection. Could he be coming down with something??
He also has issues with a rash on his face. He only has one little spot on his arm and leg, but the face is getting worse and worse.
