Isaac had blood in his stool again…..it was bright red this time so it was not so scary but it is being caused by really bad constipation. This is really tmi but the dr said that his poop is so hard that it is scraping him inside. This happens even after 2 glasses of juice a day and all whole grain foods…..So now he will be on a stool softener called Miralax.
Also his allergies have been horrible since we had to take him off of zyrtec. We have been trying Claritin but it doesn’t seem to help at all….So now he will be on Singulair.
I don’t think we will be able to send him to daycare now b/c both of these medicines are expensive I think. I am so disappointed b/c we really thought daycare would help him out alot with his delays. I really feel bad for Isaac b/c I know how allergies are alone but the horrible constipation has to be painful……….I just keep reminding myself that things could be worse.February 23, 2007 at 9:55 am #25615AnonymousInactiveI’m sorry to hear that Isaac is struggling. Poor little guy. I hope the Miralax helps him.
Claritin never worked for me either. Hopefully Singulair will do the trick for him.
I’m sorry that he won’t be able to go to daycare. Do you think you may qualify for Head Start? In some communities they have “Early Head Start” or “Birth to Three” for children under 3. I used to work for Head Start and I can tell you it’s a wonderful program.
Well, good luck. I hope Isaac is feeling better soon.
February 23, 2007 at 10:04 am #25617AnonymousInactiveWe tried for Early head start and were told that we were overincome and their overincome slots were already filled
To make matters worse the local pharmacies don’t carry the singulair that we need so I have to drive 45 mins away for it-really though that is not too bad considering that some peoples closest pharmacy is 45mins away
February 23, 2007 at 10:34 am #25624AnonymousInactiveOh Sarah — I am sorry to hear about the constipation. BUT Miralax has been a life saver for us… actually we get the Glucolax i think it is called which is the generic form of Miralax and jsut works as well and we only have to pay $5 a month… try to see if you can get it. + someone posted on the other board that Miralax is going OTC anyway soon…. so even then the cost should not be much???
Just a question – why not put him back on Zyrtec? I have contact allergies and it is the only thing that works… what allergies does he have? Don’t know anything about Syngulair but Matthew is on Nasonex for congetsion etc and it works really well too
February 23, 2007 at 12:20 pm #25636AnonymousInactiveThais-I didn’t know that there was a generic for Miralax-I just payed $26.49 for it! Isaac has indoor allergies and Zyrtec helped with that but made him too tired to function. After he was off Zyrtec he started to eat a little more and was much happier. I am supposed to take singulair for my allergies and when I actually do it works very well w/no side effects isaacsmom6182007-2-23 12:30:19
February 23, 2007 at 4:19 pm #25656AnonymousInactiveNext time, if the Miralax works for you, try to get the generic… most people use that one and i don’t think it makes a different (search in other forum, there have been some recent threads about it).
Miralax works well but for us, it took some time to get to the right dose as well as right timing!
Well, hopefully singulair will work for him too!!
February 23, 2007 at 4:52 pm #25659AnonymousInactiveHow much do you use of it? We are starting at a 1/2 cup
February 23, 2007 at 5:25 pm #25660AnonymousInactiveSarah, I’m sorry to hear that Isaac is having these problems.
We’ve had the same problems with the brutally hard poops lately. I’ve started doing the benefiber again in each bottle. It works quite well for her, and it’s also taste/grit free so they can’t tell it’s there. You can mix it with food as well. We’ve also tried MOM, since the unflavoured one just came to Canada.
About the environmental allergies, I was just wondering how these were diagnosed? What symptoms did he have?
Hope the miralax helps.
February 23, 2007 at 6:47 pm #25666AnonymousInactiveSarah,
I’m sorry to hear about the constipation and allergies! I hope the miralax & singular work for Isaac. Good luck with the daycare situation. Do you have something you could trade for daycare fees (and a daycare that would do it)? My husband’s a massage therapist, and we trade massage gift certificates for part of my Isaac’s preschool tuition. Just an idea.Good luck with everything.
February 23, 2007 at 7:13 pm #25668AnonymousInactiveLori-Isaac has been to an allergist before. And they did food allergy testing but not enviro allergy testing (b/c there is not enough room on their body to do both). The allergist said he has to have enviro allergies b/c he has had a constant runny nose, cough, sneezing and ear infections for months until they put him on zyrtec. Oh and he always had purple/red rings around his eyes and sounded congested.
Heather-We really don’t have anything that we could trade…we are just beyond poor lately w/all of these medicine changes. That is really neat that they let you do that though!
February 23, 2007 at 8:25 pm #25672AnonymousInactiveSarah- I can’t remember if Isaac is in Early Intervention but maybe they could place him in daycare a couple of days a week or something like Gymboree. When I worked in EI we often did this for the kids to give them an opportunity to work on their skills . It was great for mom and child.
Just a thought…February 23, 2007 at 8:27 pm #25674AnonymousInactivesarah—-i don’t have any advice for the constipation, but i do have an idea for pre-school. my second son was developmentally delayed and he qualified for the developmental pre-school that our public school system has. it did not cost us anything since it was through the public school and i really felt like it did him some good. he went for 2 years.
February 24, 2007 at 8:44 am #25680AnonymousInactiveLaurie-He is in Early Intervention but they don’t offer anything like that right now but in june or july he will be in a feeding group/preschool 2-3 times a month
Christine-My EI coordinator said that at 3 if he is still delayed then he will go to the preschool that you described so we have about 16 months to go I am glad to hear that it was good for him!
February 24, 2007 at 11:17 am #25685AnonymousInactiveSarah – I hope things get easier for you soon. We have had good success adding benefiber to Sarah’s bottles. She doesn’t even know it’s there. I’ve also put it in her food too. HUGS!
February 24, 2007 at 5:49 pm #25693AnonymousInactiveWe used Citrucel for Hailey to add some fiber so her diet. It adds bulk so it doesn’t hurt as bad. We used Miralax for a period of time too, I don’t remember it being that expensive but maybe we also used generic. I remember getting a huge thing of it for cheap!
