I only post here and there since Brodie has pretty much outgrown his reflux, but now I could use some help/advice. I have seen a few of you post about your children having stomach bugs recently. Brodie came down with one last Friday. He was only throwing up 2x a day, and eating and drinking about 1/3 to 1/2 of his normal intake so I thought we were doing fairly well. Sunday, he asked for a bunch of different breakfast food, and although I was hesistant to give it to him, he ate it all and kept it down. So, I thought we were on the mend. Also, his fever which was up to 103.9 degrees Friday night, broke on Sunday morning. Anyway, today, he barely ate anything all day. Then for dinner, he ate about 1/2 of his normal, and threw everything up a little while later, then he had a 1/2 of an English muffin, he threw that up 15 minutes after, then he asked for his milk before bed. I kept telling him no, because he was sick. He begged and pleaded and I gave in. Well he drank it all and 15 mintues later he statred crying and threw it all up. I am so upset, I just cried with him as he fell asleep. He already has lost 1-1/2 lbs. So how long is this misery going to last, and why would he be worse today, on day 4? He had something similar in Nov. 2005, and it lasted for 6 days!

It really fools you, since they start to eat and keep everything down and then the next day the vomiting starts up again, it is very upseting and disappointing. It just seems that it really just takes time for the virus to completely leave the body, Taylor’s most recent stomach flu lasted almost 2 weeks, 10 days of really bad vomiting and diarrhea not able to keep anything down, the last 4 days was a hit or miss with meals. It does take a tow on the body but these bugs seem to be hanging on very long. Just continue to give him whatever he wants as long as he is asking for food!

It was a few more days after that until he was feeling 100% himself again.
If he’ll cooperate he may be able to keep more down if you give him only tiny amounts at a time. I was giving Myles a tablespoon of Pedialyte every 15 – 30 minutes on the worst days and then gradually upped it to 1/2 ounce than an ounce until he could keep it down.
The ER doc I spoke to when Myles was sick said to avoid dairy and fatty foods during a stomach virus but to feed them and give them as much as they want to eat or drink even if they throw it up because it helps to flush out the virus and they absorb at least some of what they eat or drink even when they throw it up or poop it out. She didn’t say anything about the tiny amounts at a time, but I found that to work best on the bad days.
I hope he’s feeling better soon.

I called the ped.’s office this morning and had to leave a message for the nurse, I’ll see what they say. I am hesitant to even bring him in, because of all the other germs there. He is still having wet diapers so I know he is staying hydrated. He won’t drink Pedialyte or Gatorade, just plain water, which I guess is better than nothing, but I worry about the electrolyte balance. Today is day 5 and I pray this is coming to an end! You sometimes feel like things are never going to get back to normal.

I used to give Sarah diluted fruit juice, but then I discovered the pedialyte freezies. They’ve been our saviour!!! Sarah loves them. I’ve also heard that gerber makes something like pedialyte called liquilites in the US. Others have said that they taste really yummy. I would also keep away from the regular foods while he’s so sick. If you do plan on feeding him, maybe start with broths and jello. Hope it passes soon.

February 13, 2007 at 12:53 pm #24784AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone, this place is always been such a wonderful source of support! The dr.’s office didn’t request to see him at this point. They said as long as he is having wet diapers, and he doesn’t get worse to just keep on eye on him. The stomach flus have been hitting Connecticut really hard. She said to watch out for sorbitol in his drinks/juices because it can make diarrhea worse. I will try adding a bit of sugar and salt to his water and look for the pedialyte freezies, thanks again!!!

February 13, 2007 at 2:09 pm #24798AnonymousInactiveMy kids won’t drink pedialyte either, but they will drink the Gerber Liquilites.
Hopefully it will be over soon. I hate these bugs.
