i know one of the sypmtoms of acid reflux is bad breath. does this pertain to babies as well? shane has had bad breath recently, is that normal?? and why is bad breath a symptom?
i am trying to figure out if i should put him back on meds.. his only other symptom is the night moving that looks like he is uncomfortable. he is no longer waking up constantly but is back to his usual spasm type movements that i have written about before. i get mixed comments about this. i know some of you think that that means he should be back on meds and some think that that is the reflux and you cant really control it, even while the reflux is “controlled” with meds. i know when he was on prevacid before he still did it, but it could of been that he was on too low of a dose. basically i am not sure if going back through the med thing will control this or not!
February 1, 2007 at 9:05 am #23695hellbenntKeymasterbad breath is from acid- think of what acid will do to the inside of your mouth
you can try meds in the evening to see if they help with sleep- if you have zantac you can start w/ the highest dose for his weight and give 2 doses- one nid day and one in the evening & see how it goes…
February 1, 2007 at 9:10 am #23696AnonymousInactiveohh no! have i caused damage from not being on meds than?? why would the bad breath start all of a sudden?
and what age is it normal to start having bad breath? i thought it was when they started food, thank God i asked about it! i will call the nurse when they open.
February 1, 2007 at 9:20 am #23700AnonymousInactiveWow, 7 months and no meds. That is amazing. How long has he been off his meds? My thoughts are if it doesn’t seem to bother him I wouldn’t do any meds. Thats just me though.
February 1, 2007 at 9:23 am #23703AnonymousInactivehe has been off since thanksgiving. we forgot them when we were at my inlaws.. he slept there. he seemed the same with and without, soo we just left it with out since than! but his sleep is horrible! rolling around like we talked about before, and i dont know if he needs them. and he is a little clingy during the day, but i was writing that off to either teething or his personality .now the bad breath thing is getting me concerned! shanesmom2007-2-1 9:26:10
February 1, 2007 at 9:42 am #23712AnonymousInactiveBad breath can also mean that a virus is brewing or that he’s fighting something off. That’s actually the only time that Hailey’s had stinky breath. Sarah has a full mouth of teeth now, and she has morning breath if we don’t brush well.
Does Shane have any teeth yet? Is he on solids? What does his tongue look like? Is it white or pink?… some kids have more bacteria in their mouth then others and their tongue can actually get coated with plaque and cause bad smelling breath unless you brush it.
If there’s no difference between his temperament, behaviour, eating, sleeping on or off meds, and if you don’t hear him reswallowing alot and/or vomitting, then I might think he’s doing fine off the meds. Maybe you can try an H2 blocker at this point or mylanta as needed (or before bed) and see if that helps.
February 1, 2007 at 11:58 am #23725AnonymousInactivei just got off the phone with the nurse … and she wants to put him back on the prevacid.. because she thinks its night time break through acid. But the bad part is that she only wants him on 15 mg again!! what is that going to do? i dont get it!! and i questioned her and she said that its enough. ugh….
February 1, 2007 at 12:11 pm #23728hellbenntKeymasterwell you said he’s uncomfortable at night…so 15mgs in the evening might help?
February 1, 2007 at 12:29 pm #23732AnonymousInactiveWhat dose was he on before? Also, Laura makes a good point. If he’s fine during the day, then he might not need the first two doses and might be fine with just the 15 at night. Worth a try.s&h’s mum2007-2-1 12:30:17
February 1, 2007 at 12:45 pm #23738AnonymousInactiveand if it turns out the 15 mg doesnt do the full job-there are several moms on here that increase their doses themselves.,,and i am one of them. i personally am not going to through the hassle of calling the office and waiting and waiting for an okay everytime my son needs an increase. my doctor knows i do this and is fine with it. i just follow the marci-kids.com guidelines and he is doing excellent.
February 1, 2007 at 1:00 pm #23741AnonymousInactivehow can i give him more, if i only have a months worth? what happens when i run out?
i guess it might be enough for night time pain. that means i should give it to him in the evening right? thats hard to do because he eats dinner and than 2 hours later he has a bottle (hopefully). sooo do i give it before dinner? is that o.k? how much would he have to eat instead of drink for it to work? it does work with just food to set it off right?
February 1, 2007 at 1:33 pm #23745AnonymousInactiveIt’s worth a try Lauren. I don’t know if giving it before dinner though will cover him through the whole night… it’s more than 12 hours right? If you do want to give it before dinner, you don’t need to drink to activate it, food is fine. I think an age appropriate meal is fine- the bigger the better.
Good luck.
February 1, 2007 at 3:43 pm #23764AnonymousInactiveo.k thanks, i just dont think i can give it at his last bottle before bed, because lately he hasnt been drinking it, i have to wake him up and give it to him. He has dinner around 5:30, and than is soo tired by 7/7:30 because he doesnt take a good afternoon nap. soo, i dont think that is enough time between dinner and bottle to give the med, because dont you have to wait like 3 hrs from the last meal before giving the prevacid?
and like a jar of 1 babyfood dinner should be enough right?

February 1, 2007 at 4:27 pm #23767AnonymousInactiveI think Joel said 2 hours was fine.
I’m not sure if 1 jar of stage one baby food would be enough. Any amt is better than nothing, but the bigger the meal, the more pumps will be shut down. Is that all he eats for supper?
February 1, 2007 at 5:26 pm #23771AnonymousInactivechristine~
no i dont give a stage one jar for dinner.. .i give the “dinner” jars, the one’s with meat in them & veggies…. and i mix it with whole grain cereal & formula.. is that enough??
and i said one jar, because sometimes he is not too hungry, i never know when he is really ready to eat, expecially a bottle. but if he ended up not being too hunrgy, if i could just spoon feed him the jar of the baby food dinner, with out the cereal or anything else, if that would be enough… but anyhow i think it worked out fine tonight, i did a bottle first, he only drank 4 ounces and than i poured the rest of it in his dinner with the cereal and he ate half of it. soo i think if i do it like that it should be o.k. but thanks.
