I will tell you what another mom on here told me. You will have good times and bad times with reflux. Be thankful and enjoy the good times. My first son had no good times until he started to outgrow his reflux. Justice on the other hand has good and bad. He is great during the day so his is mostly sleep issues. By the way, I don’t mean for what I said to sound bad. I am right there with you. It is hard to enjoy the good times because your always wondering when the bad will hit again. Just remember someday it will be so much better. For now keep on venting. We woman need to vent and this is one place where we can do it and know we will get encourging feed back. We hear enough bad. This is where we need to stick together.
January 27, 2007 at 12:00 pm #23261AnonymousInactiveAidan went on a feeding strike for about 2ish weeks once. He only ate 8 oz every day (but it had a lot of cereal in it) and he only had4- 6 oz bottles until he was around 8-9 months old when I took out the cereal and he began to take 8 oz bottles.
January 27, 2007 at 3:04 pm #23280AnonymousInactiveHailey very rarely has taken more than 4 ounces at a feeding. 4 ounces was our target goal, if we got there I was thrilled. I think that you might just want to go with her lead. If she’s projectile vomitting again, she might be naturally decreasing her own intake b/c she’s uncomfortable, or b/c her stomach can’t handle more right now without vomitting. We found that smaller feedings were better than bigger ones for Hailey anyhow.
Through her entire existence, she’s never taken as much formula as they’ve said, and she’s gained. So I wouldn’t worry about that too much unless she’s in pain or not gaining well.
The thing with reflux, is that for some people, it’s a pretty simple course that they eventually outgrow. For others, it’s two steps forward and one step back. Either way, she’ll get there eventually.
Hang in there.
January 29, 2007 at 10:01 am #23465AnonymousInactivethanks everyone! it makes me feel so much better just to hear that i’m not alone. I do need to throw away all those charts that say what a “normal” baby SHOULD be eating and just be happy that she’s gaining some weight. She goes back to the GI doc in two weeks for a followup so i’ll know exactally how much she has gained then. sometimes i forget that she is also getting alot more rice cereal than other babies her age so that helps too.
it’s hard at times b/c my bro-n-law also has a new baby 1 week older than Lil who doesn’t have reflux and I see how easy they have it – they can feed her and put her right in the car and go somewhere, or she can lay flat on her back and play, stuff like that. Everything in Lil’s world is at an elevated angle. And even then anytime Lil is awake, something is pouring out of her mouth.
Since my original post a few days ago it’s hasn’t gotten any better. She has been eating more but the vomitting/spit up is out of control. She’s thrown up everyday now whereas she normally would space those events out over several days. She eats every 4 hours and during those 4 hours between bottles she’s spitting up. it almost seems stupid to feed her when she’s still spitting up the previous bottle 30 minutes before she eats. but when she hits 4 hours she’s hungry. anyway, thanks for letting me vent again. i just love this board and how great y’all are!! thanks!!
to answer some of your questions –
she doesn’t seem to be in too much pain. maybe a little when she has a big spit up cause she crys for a second or two. but that’s a huge improvement over how it used to be.
she gets her prevacid with “breakfast” and “dinner” then she gets the zantac throughout the day with her other feedings. all her meds are given 20-30min before she eats

Sometimes baby’s vomit can contain a lot of “fluid” due to the activities in the stomach- a lot of the goodness is probably digested by 3-4 hours so the spit up might be mainly the water bit. I know when Alana spits up on the Pepti junior after 2-3 hours it is pretty close to clear fluid, just a slight milky tinge. Still creates a laundrey problem though. It never ends either- they start solids and then you have to try and get pumpkin stains out- why do so many foods have a yellow tinge.
Alana hated lying on her back and stomach until her reflux was under control, then she got better and now she loves it. Hopefully Lil will start to enjoy it when she is feeling better.
