I am still breastfeeding and lately Ryder has been waking a lot at night again. I was thinking of giving him a bottle of rice milk. Is that okay?
He will be 9 months on the feb 2 and he is MSPI plus he doesn’t want to drink any formula—altmentum of what not.
HELP!!
January 24, 2007 at 9:57 pm #23065AnonymousInactiveRice milk is pretty low in calories and fat, so I’m not sure it would help him sleep any better. It can be pretty binding as well. My kids usually got constipated from it.
You may have to mix whatever formula you’d like to try with some expressed breast milk until he gets used to the taste. Some babies will drink anything, but others are much more particular. Myles was particular so when I made a switch I always had to start with an ounce or two mixed into whatever he was used to and gradually increase it until he got used to the new taste.
January 25, 2007 at 8:39 am #23076hellbenntKeymasteris he hungry or just waking? send in dh w/ a bottle of your milk- just maybe an ounce or two (don’t want to waste liquid gold!) and see what happens- does he suck it right down/ take a few sips & pass right back out (I’d tell dh to try to get him to sleep when giving the bottle- as in keeping the room dark, bouncing gently, saying shhhhh- whatever works…) Or maybe just try dh & a pacifier at first and see how that goes?
if he’s really hungry, then nurse him?
or try going in while he’s asleep at 11pm and nurse him then to ‘tank him up?’

i drink rice milk, and was tempted to give shane some of it in his sippy cup the other day… i dont like giving him so much soy and i didnt know if that would be o.k, i dont think in place of formula but just something else nutritious to drink. so, i would like to know what everyone else thinks as well. he is around a month younger than your son.

He isn’t gaining any weight, tho, so we mix Neocate WITH the rice milk. It makes the Neocate taste much better and it gives him a few more calories. When Carson was 12 months our doc suggested enriched rice milk – I suspect we would be on that alone if Carson would eat other foods and gain weight. I would think the rice milk would be ok if your child is getting enough calories with other foods/drink and if your child is getting enough vitamins/minerals from other places as our rice drink doesn;t have many. It is very hard to find things for babies to eat/drink when the are MSPI – or should I say that THEY will eat! Good luck! This MSPI stuff is the pits!!
