I’m not sure what’s going on with my little one right now, hopefully someone will be able to help!!
Dagney was dx’d with MSPI at about 1 month, we switched her to Nutramigen. Then at 9 weeks, they diagnosed her with GERD. She had all the classic symptoms–arching, gurgling, spitting up, making those noises in her throat. The Zantac did nothing, then we got her on PRevacid, took her to the Pedi GI on 20 Dec, who decided since she has mucus in her spit up, she is actually allergic to the Nutramigen, so she switched her to the Neocate. She’s been on Neocate with rice cereal since about 27 Dec. In the mean time, she was still exhibiting most of the symptims, including a couple of choking fits. The Pedi GI would only let us go up to 22.5 mg/day of Prevacid, and then finally about 10 days ago our regular Pediatrician let us go up to 30mg/day.
Things were GREAT for 5 days, she even slept 12 hours last Tuesday night! Then on Wednesday, she got the oral rotavirus vaccine, and things have gone downhill since. I don’t know if it’s the reflux, the Neocate, her being a curious/stubborn 4 month-old, or the vaccine just needing to get out of her system. She’s started again with only taking in about 3 ounces, yelling, screaming if you try to give her more, and really moving around while she’s eating. I’m back to feeding her a little, letting her wait for about 30-40 mins, then trying to feed some more while the bottle is still good. She’s not obviously in pain the rest of the day, but she MUCH prefers to be held and carried around, and getting her to go to sleep is now again a struggle (putting her down, she wakes up, starting over–for about 1 hour or so). Yesterday she was very quiet, but didn’t have a temperature, so I don’t think she’s sick, but I’m not sure what to think anymore! I have a bit of a sinus problem/cold right now, so I’m not sure if maybe she could have the same thing, although she doesn’t seem congested at all. My pediatrician said if she wasn’t better by today, he’d want to reevaluate, as the vaccine could affect her tummy for about 2-4 days. I was going to see how today went, and give him a call tomorrow if she wasn’t any better.
Does anyone have any ideas for me? Could it be the Neocate? If it’s the Neocate, what comes after that??
Thanks in advance…

Some babies have tried elecare instead, basically like neocate though, but a different brand.
Are you giving the prevacid on an empty stomach and following up with a meal 30 minutes later? How many doses?
January 22, 2007 at 11:17 am #22877AnonymousInactivewe’re using the beechnut rice, which she seems ok with. she’s not constipated or too gassy. i do normally give it 20-30 mins before a bottle
she’s also just kind of whiney a lot over the last few days, i’m also wondering if shes starting to teeth
January 22, 2007 at 1:17 pm #22885AnonymousInactiveIs she pooping regularily? Does she seem gassy?
It’s so hard to sort through things when there are so many variables to consider.
I’d probably be more suspicious of the vaccine first (this is a very new vaccine and probably not a whole lot is known yet about the possible side effects….not to scare you…I’m sure it’s safe….but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that it effects a baby for longer than 2-4 days).
Next, I’d wonder if the rice cereal is too binding for her and/or may be causing gas. This is pretty common with infants and rice cereal.
I think it’s pretty rare for a baby to be allergic or intolerant to Neocate but there has been at least one baby on this board who was. Still I’d probably not suspect that to be the problem just yet.
And since she was doing so well for five days on Prevacid, I would’t think it was that. However, some babies do have tummy cramps from the added ingredients, but it usually does pass within that initial two week period as the body adjusts to the medication. Myles had definite cramping from it for the first 10 -14 days, but then it stopped and he did great.
So, my mommy intuition would tell me to wait it out a few more days before chaning anything. Except that I might consider trying oatmeal instead of rice because I had such good luck with oatmeal with all of my babies, but other than that I think I’d wait it out a little longer and see if the vaccine might be the problem, or if she just needs to adapt to the medication.
Good luck. I hope she’s feeling better soon, and please keep us posted.
January 23, 2007 at 11:19 am #22939AnonymousInactiveThe vaccine seems more likely the culprit …. or even the rice…when did youstart the rice cereal? My dd gets mucousy and chokes when she eats any rice cereal (soy, dairy free) she gets mucousy from any food except neocate….
I would give it a day or two to see if its the vaccine and then go from there
good luck, I know its not fun to play detective all the time
January 23, 2007 at 12:26 pm #22941AnonymousInactiveYes, think it’s the vaccine too. She’s been on rice cereal for over 1 month and seems fine with it. She again is basically refusing to eat her 2nd bottle, I managed to get her to eat about 3 ounces, but I don’t want it to be a struggle and then get bad associations! She seems a bit better today, and slept great last night, so I’m going to give it another day…
January 23, 2007 at 12:32 pm #22942AnonymousInactiveGlad to hear she’s a bit better today. Hopefully she’ll be back to herself very soon.
January 23, 2007 at 12:39 pm #22943AnonymousInactiveI am glad she is feeling better today! Sometimes it is so hard to figure out what is really going on with them!
