Hi. I am new to this site. I have a daughter who is 2 and a half months old. She is refusing to drink her bottle. This has been going on for about a month on and off but has been consistent this past week. The doctor says she has silent reflux because she does not spit up. She often makes gagging noises, has the hiccups, and coughs. I feel that I am force feeding her because I want her to at least take a little. Once I get the bottle in her mouth she has no problem drinking it, but she will not even let the bottle into her mouth. She throws her arms and legs about and screams. She only gets between 10 and 16 oz. per day. She has been on Zantac for 2 weeks but she is only getting worse. Now that she is losing weight i am really getting concerned. Any advice?
February 23, 2006 at 2:11 pm #2270AnonymousInactiveAsk the dr about putting her on a ppi (prevacid is what my little guy takes, he’s 9 weeks). My son also has silent reflu and also never takes more than 16oz a day.The prevacid has been wonderful!!! although it takes about a week to a week and a hakf to kick in.
February 23, 2006 at 2:17 pm #2271AnonymousInactiveany helpful hints on how you get him to eat??
February 23, 2006 at 3:07 pm #2277AnonymousInactiveWelcome to the site – everyone here is wonderful and full of such good information.
Zach too is a silent refluxer and we originally tried Zantac.
That did nothing for him so the ped put him on Prevacid and that is
when he was comfortable enough to eat. I truly don’t think there
is anything you can do to “make” them eat except to get them on the
right meds so they feel better. I’m with Jill, check with your
doctor for a PPI. Zach is also on Prevacid and after about 11
days on that, he was a different baby. Good luck!February 23, 2006 at 3:10 pm #2279AnonymousInactivewell, since he has been on the prevacid, he has been ok but he still sometimes gags on the bottle and sometimes it takes me a good 5 mins to get him to take it, but I found that if I stand up and bounce and rock him while I try to feed him (like you would if you were trying to put her to sleep) it calms him down enough to take the bottle. He does the screaming/bottle refusal thing every day in the evening even WITH the medicine, I think that sometimes they refuse to eat at first cause it hurts, but eventually they get over hungry and are so starving that all they can DO is scream, and that’s when it gets hard to get them to eat (at least that is what I think I’ve seen with mine he’ll get so hungry he kind of loses it and just wails and forgets that the bottle is food?).
February 23, 2006 at 4:18 pm #2288AnonymousInactiveThank you so much for your advice. I called my doctor and he is going to give her a prescription for prevacid and she has an appointment to have an Upper GI tomm. Did either of your babies have an Upper GI– just wondering what to expect.
February 23, 2006 at 4:52 pm #2289AnonymousInactiveAidan has not yet, We are going to the Ped. GI doc tomorrow (Aidan’s pediatrician is a moron even though she DID get the dose of prevacid right). Keep us updated on what you learn!!!
February 23, 2006 at 5:29 pm #2293AnonymousInactiveMy daughter had a UGI done at 9 weeks. It was relatively simple, as far as testing goes, and she really didn’t even cry. They swaddled her in a blanket, and then they strapped her down to a table. I have heard of other people who didn’t have their kids restrained (we are in Canada so maybe it’s different). Then they had her drink some barium- they tried a bottle, but she wouldn’t take it, so they did a syringe and she sucked it back out of the large syringe (way better than she ever ate at home). While this was happening, there was an X-ray type machine over her that was showing how the barium was moving, and they occasionally rotated the table to get different angles. Hailey didn’t make a peep, and she seemed quite comfortable during the whole thing, which only lasted about 15 minutes at the most. They gave us the results on the spot.
If you would like more info about this procedure, you could try using the search button for “Upper GI”. I know there have been other threads started about this, but don’t know how to post links. Good luck. I hope that things go well and that your little one is doing better soon. (And welcome to the site.)
February 23, 2006 at 6:23 pm #2298AnonymousInactiveyou can go to http://www.ausrad.com for a description of all radiology procedures. My guy had one at 5wks and I have performed many as an xray tech. Most places do use the restraint, makes the exam go a lot quicker. Just remember baby may or may not reflux during the exam. This is not the best exam to rule out reflux but to check for anatomical abnormalities.
Zantac did nothing for my guy. life got much better on prevacid!
February 23, 2006 at 7:15 pm #2301hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!
my son also had (yup, HAD) silent reflux
This is my welcome/intro- It is long but full of really great info, so try to read as much as you can.
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&am p;am p;am p;PN=1&TPN=1PPIs are great but you need to make sure you’re giving a good dose and administering it properly- this is all from the link above- look for ‘Prevacid 101’

February 23, 2006 at 7:36 pm #2304AnonymousInactivemy doctor prescribed 15ml of the tablets but said to take only half a day–doesn’t that seem like not enough? How did you get your babies to take the tablets? the pharmacist said a spoon but my daughter is only 11 weeks. Also, did you continue the Zantac while starting the prevacid?
February 23, 2006 at 7:51 pm #2305hellbenntKeymasterhi there,
from my welcome/intro https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&am p;PN=1&TPN=1
there’s a link ‘prevacid 101’ https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&a mp;PN=0&TPN=1 and from here you can look up doses (Yes, that is a small dose) and how to administer the solutabs and when to administer them
also, in the welcome/intro I write to yes, continue with the zantac! just make sure that you give it at least 2 hrs (or more) seperate from the prevacid
February 24, 2006 at 12:45 pm #2350AnonymousInactiveI have a medicine dropper, I mix the soltab with a tiny bit of water, put it in the dropper and give it to him like that.
February 24, 2006 at 1:53 pm #2356AnonymousInactiveHow did the upper gi go? Hopefully well! We have tried the solutabs and Isaac hated them but most babies seem to like them.
February 24, 2006 at 2:57 pm #2368AnonymousInactiveHi. I am back from the upper GI. Taylin screamed the whole time. The woman told us that we would have to wait to get the results from the pediatrician on Monday. I am really concerned about her prevacid dose- she started today 7.5 mg once a day. I called the doctors office and they said my doctor would be back on Monday and I would have to wait to talk to him to see if he gave me that dose for a reason. I know after reading on this site that dose seems really low. I also wonder if I should keep up with her zantac until the prevacid kicks in even though my doctor said not to. Its all so frustrating!
