Isaac behaved very well for the whole evaluation. They just asked me alot of questions and played with him one on one. Then they filled out a sheet with what he should be doing at 19months old. Isaac was found to have a few issues. His fine motor skills are delayed and are at a 12 month level. His has sensory sensitivity with a low threshold. His speech is also mildly delayed (this kind of suprised me) and since he is already going to get therapy for the other 2 issues they said we might as well give him help for speech too.
So basically that means that we will have a Developmental Therapist come to the house to work with him. And at the first visit she will decide on if we need to have a speech therapist and occupational therapist too (they told me that they are pretty sure that he will need both).
It really feels like they finally listened to me and could see what I saw! I have felt like no other dr has listened to dh and I when we have been telling them something is wrong. I started crying on the way home b/c I really feel like this was a prayer answered for us….I could really use the help and support. I was so worried all last night that they would turn us down.lol
Another neat thing about the program is that they have play groups, swim time, and respite (I can drop him off for a few hours and do whatever I want free of charge b/c he is considered special needs 😉 )
They gave me some info on medical coverage and I think at least one of the ideas will work out. We talked about COBRA but the way dh’s work insurance is set up we would have to pay way too much even with it-they have the deductibles so high and they reimburse us but they won’t do that for people that don’t work there 😉
Sorry this was so long but I had so much to update on!January 16, 2007 at 2:03 pm #22471AnonymousInactiveTerrific news!
I’m so happy you finally found people who recognize his problems and who will be able to help him. It must be such a tremendous weight lifted off of your shoulders.
And respite care as well! Wow! That’s terrific and you sure deserve it. Do something for yourself while he is having fun at the program.
I wish you the very best and hope this is the answer you’ve been waiting for.
January 16, 2007 at 3:39 pm #22482AnonymousInactiveThat’s so great Sarah! I’m so glad that they’re going to be addressing the issues. Are you going to have a feeding therapist come as well. We found that having someone come specifically to give the feeding therapy was really helpful. I loved the SLP who came. The OT dealt with sensory issues and other developmental delays she had, but the SLP only did the feeding. That worked well for us.
I’m so happy for you. I know how excited you feel, because I can remember the excitement and the sigh of relief when we finally got therapy for Hailey’s delays as well.
I pray that this is the answer you’ve been looking for, and that it unlocks the doors to all the help that Isaac needs. HUGS.
January 16, 2007 at 3:45 pm #22485AnonymousInactiveLori-I cannot remember if they said SLP or not so I didn’t put it on there….I was really overwhelmed with a lot of info at once. they are supposed to mail it all to me in a couple of days
January 16, 2007 at 3:47 pm #22486AnonymousInactiveIt’s great that they are acting so quickly. And the respite is a nice touch too. Do they come to your home, or do you go somewhere else for the therapy?
January 16, 2007 at 3:52 pm #22487AnonymousInactiveThey come to my home but i would rather they didn’t b/c that means I will have to super clean I mean my house is usually clean but I will have to detail the house
January 16, 2007 at 3:58 pm #22489AnonymousInactiveLOL, Sarah. Our house is far from clean! In fact, I used to make no effort whatsoever to clean up for EI when they came here anymore than I would for anyone else. I didn’t have the time with Hailey screaming all the time, so I just figured, hey, this is what life is like for us now, I’m not going to sugar coat it for them. When the co-ordinator came out one day, I hadn’t cleaned up for a while b/c I was so tired and busy with Hailey, she spoke to me for a bit, and then after seeing the mess in the kitchen, I assume, offered me respite care to watch Hailey so I could “get a break, take a nap, or clean up the house a bit!”.
January 16, 2007 at 4:23 pm #22491AnonymousInactiveLOL Maybe I shouldn’t clean up…at least they understand what it is like for us! isaacsmom6182007-1-16 18:1:24
January 16, 2007 at 5:04 pm #22494AnonymousInactiveYEAH!!! Wonderful news on the therapies – sorry to hear that there are a few issues but it seems like they have caught them and they will just have to work on them!!
So happy for you – respite should be nice and well deserved… and hopefully the play groups will be fun for both of you
January 16, 2007 at 7:17 pm #22497AnonymousInactiveWonderful news, Sarah! Our OT from EI is the one that does all of Bryce’s feeding therapy. I wonder if it will be the same with you? I totally know how you feel about not wanting to have them come to your house. I don’t like that either. Especially now that Bryce is getting PT, ST, and nurse visits as well as feeding therapy. My house is never as clean as I’d like it to be since Bryce was born, and my boys can unclean much faster than I can clean.
I hope Isaac can make some real improvements with this, and you can have some stress eased. Good luck with everything! Keep us posted.
January 16, 2007 at 7:40 pm #22498AnonymousInactiveThat’s wonderful news!!! I am the EXACT same way that you are about having a clean house with people over. I am not a neat freak housekeeper, but when someone is coming over…I go into overdrive trying to make the house appear decent (and hoping they don’t look at the dust bunnies I left behind!)
WHAT I WILL SAY…being a former Service Coordinator is that I 100% guaruntee that coming to your house for therapy is probably a respite for THEM because of some of the other houses they have entered. I visited the homes too to set everything up and would literally gag and try to hold back tears when I saw what some of these children lived in. Cockroaches, spiders, insane amount of pets, feces…ugh! My best friend is a Developmental Therapist and she always looks forward to going to the ‘clean’ houses. By clean I mean you don’t have to look twice at the carpet before you sit down!!!
I know, if you’re like me, that you will continue to clean your house and be self conscious about the visitors…but trust me when I say that they appreciate it for being sanitary!
Good luck with everything and I’m excited you’re on the right track!
AmyJanuary 16, 2007 at 8:27 pm #22501AnonymousInactiveAmy-Oh wow! That is just horrible! My grandma always said that no matter how poor you are you can always afford a bottle of bleach!
January 16, 2007 at 10:10 pm #22507AnonymousInactiveI agree with your grandma!!! There is no excuse for being dirty!
January 17, 2007 at 1:47 am #22512AnonymousInactiveAmy,
That’s horrible! It makes you feel so bad for the little kids who have to live in that filth . Do you ever have to call the health department or anyone? Or do you have to just let it go? Just curious.Yeah, my house might be cluttered at times, but it’s not dirty. Like you said, there’s no excuse for that kind of filth.
January 17, 2007 at 9:09 am #22516AnonymousInactiveThe sad thing is that DCFS won’t act upon a filthy house unless cockroaches are found IN the babies diaper (meaning they ingested them). Or there is proof that feces was ingested. At least that’s how it was when I worked in the system. I think the standards for cleanliness need to be re-evaluated by the State!
I have a whole new appreciation for the phrase “He/She has a bad home life”. I could never comphrehend what that truly meant until I saw some of the living conditions. Now that I am a teacher, I have a lot more sympathy for some of my students.
Very sad!!!
