Jay’s stool results came in, the dr called. He is also suffering from fat malabsorption. What the heck is that? She said it showed on his fecal fact tests and they were abnormal. Now finally we are going to see a GI, and got the appt for Feb 2nd. It is a long long wait. Do you guys have any idea what that means and what can be done about it? I’m already depressed enough that he is NOT EATING, now this????
January 15, 2007 at 1:06 pm #22400AnonymousInactiveI did a google search to try and help you out, but there wasn’t that much specific to fat malabsorption. There was something that talked about infants that have fat malabsorption doing well a alimentun becuause half of the fat is provided by MCT (medium chain triglycerides), which do not require the normal fat digestive pathways. I know that doesn’t tell you much, but maybe at least you could use this formula , or if you are breastfeeding (I can’t remember) you can figure out what you need to eat from your diet.
Here is the best link I could find. It is about malabsorption in general(in pediatric patients I believe in specific), but it has a section on fat.
I will pray for you and Jay!

I don’t know anything about fat malabsorption so I can’t give you any advice, but it’s sure a good thing that they found it and I’m sure it can be treated with special formulas or supplementations.
I will keep Jay in my prayers. Please post after your appointment to let us know how Jay is and what they doctor recommends. I will be thinking of you and maybe your experience will help others down the road.
January 15, 2007 at 3:33 pm #22413AnonymousInactivethere can be a number of causes of fat malabsorption. i know that some celiacs have a problem with it, but none of my girls did.
January 15, 2007 at 5:02 pm #22420AnonymousInactiveI’m sorry to hear about Jay’s diagnosis . It’s good that you got the stool test & found out about it. I hope it’s nothing serious, and something easy to treat. You might want to try calling the GI and getting on a waiting list. Also, if your ped calls the GI, they might be able to get you in sooner (that’s what we did, but we were dealing with weight issues). Good luck with everything. I’ll be praying for you and Jay.

January 18, 2007 at 9:53 pm #22625AnonymousInactiveMy son had fat malabsorption problems and he has celiac disease, from about 6-12 months, his body wasnt being able to use the food correctly due to the gluten in his system damaging it….but since going gluten free hes been fine….
his gi told me a quick way to check is if his stool if foul smelling (like worse than “normal” and if it floats when in the toilet) ….when he gets accidental glutening now he gets these types of issues too…
I dont know tons about it, but your gi should help you out with testing and whatnot….good luck
