Well, Adriana was doing pretty good on 15 mg prevacid solutabs a day. (I added 7.5 extra a day by myself, the doc had only prescribed 7.5 a day) BUT, we went to the ped. GI who said she was on way too much and lowered her to 9 mg of compounded Prevacid a day. I showed him the marci kids info, but he didn’t care. Plus he wanted me to switch back to Enfamil AR. That made her so fussy and she seemed to be getting worse. So we switched back to Isomil with 1 tsp. rice cereal per oz. She now seems to be getting even worse. She is struggling at every bottle, squirmy, fussy, crying, and gassy. Plus she was already having solid bowel mvmts with the Isomil, and now they come out as only 1 small terd. What should I do? I feel like I should have never gone there. Anyone know a good doctor in the Chicago, IL area?
January 5, 2007 at 10:17 pm #21784AnonymousInactiveMaybe you could appeal to your regular ped? Sometimes they will listen or you can just go to another ped GI. I don’t know how much she weighs but I cannot remember ever having that low of a dose with Isaac. And when it comes to formula I would go with whatever seems to work better b/c you are the one that will be with her 24/7 not the ped GI. What was the reasoning for putting her back onto enfamil ar?
January 5, 2007 at 10:22 pm #21786AnonymousInactivethe AR was to thicken the feeds. Thats why we started the rice cereal.
January 5, 2007 at 11:06 pm #21787AnonymousInactiveI really never thought that the AR was any different than adding rice cereal to other formulas myself-did you notice a difference?
January 5, 2007 at 11:11 pm #21788AnonymousInactivear will not work if your child is on a reflux medication: here is the article, which refers to stomach ph levels:
“There is a formula that tries to address issues surrounding reflux
called Enfamil AR. It has rice starch that curdles when it hits the low
pH of the stomach making it less likely for reflux to occur. However,
if your child is on Zantac, then the stomach pH isn’t low, so the
Enfamil AR won’t work.”the link:

its really unfortunate that your ped wont listen to the marci kids info. its obvious that your daughter needs her dose increased.
also, it sounds like shes constipated, soy can do that sometimes. you may want to add a teaspoon of dark karo syrup into her bottles.
I have a ped GI in the Chicago IL area. She was recommended to me by Dr Phillips-the professor at marci-kids. her name is Dr Barbara Kirschner-she is at the university of Chicago i believe it is-i was there a while ago with my son.
January 6, 2007 at 12:28 am #21792AnonymousInactivethanks, i will be making an appointment even though its an hour away.
January 6, 2007 at 9:59 am #21793AnonymousInactiveI hope you can get her to another gi. This one seems arrogant and you’ll never get anywhere with him.
I sure feel for you. My first refluxer never got relief until she finally outgrew it at 9 months of age. It was horrible to say the least. And I had to fight months to get the high dose of Prevacid Myles needed, but it was so worth it because 10 days after he started the marci-kids dose he was a new baby.
I wish you the best and hope you can get an appt with Dr. Kirschner very soon. If the wait is long ask to be put on the cancellation list and maybe take your son to your family doctor in the meantime. Some of us (including myself) have had the best luck getting adequte PPI dosing from family docs. They seem to know more about reflux and reflux meds since they see it in their adult patients all the time and I think they are more sympathetic about how painful it is because they hear their adult patients complain about the pain. Sometimes peds are so insensitive and ped gi’s are so insensitive. Maybe because a baby can’t tell them how bad it hurts.
Good luck and please keep us posted.
January 6, 2007 at 3:27 pm #21794AnonymousInactiveHopefully Dr. K. can help you. We drive over an hour to see a doctor who never does anything for Hailey and never prescribes her a decent dose of meds. Even though he’s from the top team in the province, and we’ve exhausted all other options, I’ve learned that if you don’t like your doc then it’s best to find someone who you can work with. I’m giving our ped GI one last chance. If he doesn’t do something for Hailey on our visit next week, then I’m going back to our original GI who transferred us to him. At least she listened. Good luck.
