I am not producing enough milk, apparently, and need to supplement, but my son will not take Alimentum or Nutraminagen because he is used to BFing and they taste awful. Following some advice on the boards, I am feeding him rice milk with a little Alimentum, canola oil and chocolate syrup and he is finally gaining weight. The problem? I am worrid about him getting enough protein. He will not eat chicken, only roasted turkey if it was made that day. Should I be worried about his protein intake? Rice milk doesn’t have much. My son just turned 1 yesterday.

will he eat beans? there are so many kinds and ways to prepare them…there’s hummous, but the flavor can be strong, so you could just blend some chick peas in the blender w/ a lot of oil to make a spread…
what about nuts? there’s almond butter and cashew butter- full of protein…
these seem like they’d be full of protein- look/ask about products made from them @ your local health food market:
besan (gram, chickpea flour) Pale yellow flour made from ground, dried chickpeas; very nutritious, high in protein. Used in doughs, dumplings, and noodles; as a thickener for sauces; and as a batter for deep fried food.
channa Type of chickpea grown in the East Indies. Used whole or ground into flour.
dal (dhal) Split peas or beans from India; used whole, pureed, or ground as flour.
gram flour (besan) Made from chickpeas.
how about pasta? I once looked at a box of pasta and it has more protein than I thought…
how does he do with hidden dairy? if you haven’t tried, then I’d try that, maybe start w/ some cheese crackers. If he does well with that you can try cheese and even yogurt…many mspi toddlers wind up being able to handle these things, but not straight milk…also, you might want to try flax seed oil w/ the rice milk…I’d also inquire about avocado oil at your local health food market…

I have been feeding him hummus since he was very young, maybe 7 or 8 months? He LOVES it. It’s really a staple of his diet, like how other kids eat dairy daily, he eats hummus nearly daily. If you live out west, they have it at Trader Joe’s, Wild Oats and natural health food stores. I think a lot of regular grocery stores sell it now, too. Just look to try and buy a plain one at first. a lot of them are garlic flavored, or have some sort of other flavoring. Just check the ingrediants lke you would for MSPI and see if they sound okay. My son loves it. You can even let your little guy try eating it himself with his hands or let him try a spoon, it’s fun for them at this age, too.
