Just curious what are some good first foods for reflux babies? I make Justice’s food and we have started out on advacados, banannas, and oatmeal. I have stopped banannas because I have heard they are not the best for reflux babies. We are ready to move on, but I’m not sure what to move on to. Any ideas? He’s still not ready for anything he has to chew since he throws up when he gags. We have also tryed those stars that melt in their mouths, but he will get them stuck in the back of his mouth and throw up. So, I guess you could say I’m looking for stuff I can puree.
December 27, 2006 at 11:52 am #21131AnonymousInactiveAt 7 months Myles tolerated pears, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and oatmeal. That was about it until he was much older.
At 8 months I added peaches and he did fine with that. Around 9 months he could eat green veggies like peas, spinach, broccoli, and berries (blueberries and strawberries).
If you make your own baby food you should probably not do carrots because they are root vegetables and can contain nitrites….so it’s better to buy them since the baby food comapanies supposedly test for that. I used the Gerber Organic brand.

December 27, 2006 at 4:04 pm #21153AnonymousInactivehmm.. i would try the step 1 pureed first.. thats what i did with shane. the sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, peas, and bananas were first. we dont seem to have any problems with bananas. oh ya and he choked on the home made avicados a lot if i dont blend it very well.i tried to leave out as much fruits first so that he will like the veggies. i heard that they wont like the veggies as much if you do fruit first. when i did fruit i made sure i left out berries. but now we just started stage 2’s and i am starting to add the protiens now.
well thats the order we went in! good luck, i hope he loves it!!

December 27, 2006 at 4:44 pm #21157AnonymousInactiveSorry Natalie. That was my experience with my first son Luke. We would put a receiving blanket in his lap because he threw up all the time.
December 28, 2006 at 8:16 am #21171hellbenntKeymasterI MADE A LOT OF MY OWN FOOD
oops caps lock
it’s a lot of trial & error…
i also sometimes bought organic frozen fruits/veggies & steamed & pureed them…
December 28, 2006 at 9:07 am #21175AnonymousInactiveWe have done rice cereal, applesauce, bananas, peas, sweet potatoes, green beans, and prunes with great success. One of those makes her constipated but I haven’t figured out the exact culprit yet. (obviously not the prunes)
We tried pears early on but I was suspicious it flared up her reflux…now I”m not so sure so I’m going to try them again. We have been lucky that no baby foods seem to make her reflux much worse and better yet….we’ve yet to find a food that she doesn’t like! I’m going to try some actual green beans soon. See how she handles those. Sarah didn’t really care for those star puffs either. I think she just didn’t know what to do with them!
Good luck! I hope it goes smoothly for you!

and i forgot to mention that i think the pears do flare his reflux up a bit as well.. i think apples do a little too but not as much as pears.
December 28, 2006 at 5:07 pm #21225AnonymousInactivebaby food bananas have citric acid in them (to preserve them, they’d turn brown like normal bananas without it-lol) I always gave Aidan real bananas mixed with formula to thin them. I used to mix the avacado with formula too…but I think no matter what, avacado is just plain nasty!!! LOL Aidan ate a TOn of green veggies to start (was good he won’t TOUCH them now!!) Lots of peas and green beans. He couldn’t do carrots or bananas for a long time, but did ok with sweet potatos. Squash was alright-but gave him diaper rash! I did give him blueberries at 6 months (not advocating this just sharing) b/c they’re not actually a berry, they are in the same family as cranberries and not really high on the allergy list (plus we have no food alergies anywhere so I wasn’t concerned) Frozen veggies taste different than purrees, even wehn you puree them! Frozen baby sweet peas are AWESOME!!! Takes a while to get them mushy enough to puree though. I use to give him mango and papaya b/c they contain digestive enzymes (or something, info from my lovely vegan/dietician sister in law), and suprisingly they didn’t bother his reflux, well, I think the mango might have a little, and it was a bit stringy, I just mixed both of those with formula. Anyway good luck! Right now, Aidan will only eat fruit!!! He knows already “if it’s green it’s nasty”, but I think he’ll still eat peas. ohhhhhh you can also give yogurt at 6 months, that’s what Aidan’s ped said, unless they have a dairy issue. Aidan LOVES yogurt, always has.
December 28, 2006 at 7:23 pm #21231AnonymousInactiveLauren,
Myels won’t eat plain avacado either. I usually mash it as fine as I can (with a little water, milk or formula to thin it some) and then add it to his other pureed baby foods. Sneaky, hugh? He doesn’t even notice it.
December 28, 2006 at 7:43 pm #21232AnonymousInactiveI didn’t do anything special to the avacados. I just waited until they were nice and soft and then cut them open and mashed them. We never had chunks unless I didn’t wait until they were soft. You can put them in a paper bag to make them soft or ripe I should say. Justice loved them, but then again they were the first thing we tryed.
December 28, 2006 at 9:12 pm #21239AnonymousInactiveWe did the same thing – just mashed the avocados really fine and thinned it out with a little breastmilk when they were first starting out. My kids loved it and still love avocados to this day.
December 29, 2006 at 7:55 am #21251AnonymousInactivewith the yogurt, since its whole milk in it… how come you dont have to wait until they are 1 ??
i was thinking of trying it to see how it goes..
