the last few days, well actually weeks have been really bad. my son is 6wks today & we have been trying different combo’s of med & formula’s…currently we are on soy & taking zantac & reglan…none of which appear to be working. we are having some tests run wed…upper GI, small bowel follow through & ab Xray….we’re hoping for some sort of answers or maybe just another piece of the puzzle but as this point we’re not sure what to think anymore. this whole experience has been very overwhelming & exhausting. he screams all day long. i’ve been charting his feedings & behaviors & it appears that he starts screaming about 20 to 30 min after he eats…..the last few days the screaming has continued throughout the day & night.
is there hope? will it ever get better? will he ever not be in pain or scream all day?

You may want to read some of the information in the MSPI Forum. Many babies who have problems with dairy will also have problems digesting soy.
Yes, there is definitley hope. The right combination of a good PPI (at the right dose) and the right forumla can really turn things around. The medication part of the puzzle is the easier part to solve…..try to push for a PPI and don’t even bother with Zantac or other H2 Blockers because they rarely are effective enough to help our babies.
The formula part of the puzzle can be the bigger challenge. Personally if I thought one of my babies was intolerant to milk I’d probably skip the soy and go right to a specialty formula like Alimentum or Nutramigen. You should stick with a formula for two weeks because it can take that long for offending proteins to be rid from the body.
I didn’t have MSPI babies so I don’t know a whole lot about it (only what I’ve read here), but many moms here have or are dealing with it and will be able to give you some advice.
Good luck and hang in there.
December 26, 2006 at 12:52 pm #21045AnonymousInactiveThings will get better! I agree with Christine about getting on the proper dose of PPI. Zantac worked for us, but only for a few weeks…also, Brianna had a hard time with dairy and will soy too…in fact, she still seems to have more of a rough day if I eat any soy products…so maybe a different formula would help. One more thing..I know I have read about Reglan causing weird symptoms/side effects in some children…if your Dr. wants you on something for DGE I think there are other medicines maybe you could try. Good luck

My son still reacted to Alimentum. You might want to consider trying Neocate or EleCare since they are amino-acid based and are milk/soy free. If you get milk and soy totally out of the picture, you can concentrate on stabilizing your little one on the meds. Then, once stable, you could reintroduce Alimentum or Nutramigen to see if the milk is a factor. Just a thought.
Emily: What is DGE?
Thanks, Dianne

i would avoid reglan unless your baby has diagnosed DGE, even then there are safer motility medications.
