Honestly, if 18 months of silent reflux, sleep deprivation, and feeding aversion don’t do me in, then this past few weeks might. What is wrong with my child? If I hear one more time that it’s “just a virus” I think I’ll scream.
A few weeks ago Hailey had a cold, started coughing. Got to the point that every time we laid her down to go to bed, she would wake up multiple times covered in vomit, or would projectile vomit when you’d pick her up. We assumed that it was from the cold, and the postnasal drip, and the cough etc. Thankfully it passed in about a week, then we had one decent week. During this week I started her on a probiotic and it seemed to help. Fast forward to the following week, she wakes up with a high fever and we find out that she has yet another cold and an ear infection. She starts zithromax and finishes that on Friday. We’ve used this antibiotic 5 or more times with no problems. Then Friday night, she starts retching and vomits all over the place 7 or more times. She can’t keep anything down and is vomitting up water as well. Saturday morning she has fever again and is lying around all day like she’s really ill. She’s wetting diapers, and doesn’t seem dehydrated. Pukes up some water in the morning, and has nothing else except some water all day. She’s cutting 4 molars and two other teeth as well. Sunday, she seems a bit better so I feed her her formula and then she projectile pukes all over the place. She continues wretching until she vomits up bile. Monday, no more fever, seems alright. She’s drinking her soy milk fine during the day, not eating much, but a few bites here and there and no vomit. But all this time she’s been vomitting up her CaraCream and hasn’t had a good dose of meds. So the past two days I’ve given her solutabs in the morning, 30mg, and then tried to get her to take her CaraCream at night, which she’s never gotten in her. Then last night, the horror started again- vomitted 6 times- couldn’t keep down any formula at all. Even vomitted water. She woke up this morning and was moaning and asked for milk. I gave her a cup of soy milk after a solutab and she took 4 oz. No vomit yet. But I see that she does have a rash on her back and her arms. Roseola is at the daycare. Any thoughts on what this is? I took her to the doc twice last week: first time he said virus and ear infection, and the second time he said new virus. Now we have no idea what’s going on! How many viruses is this? Or is it reflux or a digestive problem? How long can she go on not keeping anything down? If it’s a stomach bug why is the vomitting only happening at night? Can anyone solve this mystery. I hate to complain about this, but I’m truly at my wits end.
December 12, 2006 at 9:05 am #20122AnonymousInactivekids will get a rash with a virus sometimes, i can’t remember how to spell what it is called, but it starts with an X. i have seen this alot in my kids—-i don’t take them to the doc for it anymore because i have seen it so many times. when kids are sick, their fever tends to go up in the evening—this could be why she vomits in the evenings and not the day.

I would be frustrated to keep hearing “it’s just a virus” because obviously the poor girl is suffering…and so is her mommy! I’m not sure what roseola is, or the symptoms…but I hope you figure out what’s going on SOON!
Hang in there!
AmyDecember 12, 2006 at 10:47 am #20138AnonymousInactiveYou must be just wiped out. I know you’re probably worried sick but I’ll bet it’s viruses. There are countless bugs out there and it’s so easy for little kids to contract them, especially when they are already run down from being sick.
Last winter Liza started pre-school and she (no exageration here whatsoever) was sick with some kind of virus nearly every other week for the entire winter. I had a newborn with reflux and was pumping around the clock and dealing with her viruses which she of course passed to Ellie, so I remember in vivid detail how horrible it was.
And I do remember that often times they were ok during the day but would puke all night. I would put them to bed thinking ok we’re done with this crap only to be awakened later to them puking. I really don’t know why….maybe in Hailey’s case it’s because when she’s laying down her reflux flares up and triggers her gag reflex and makes her throw up.
I hope things get better soon.
December 12, 2006 at 11:29 am #20143AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear that things are so rough… but i have to say that it does sound like a virus… unfortunately when some babies have fevers, they just vomit… for a baby with a feeding aversion, it is so hard to watch.
Hope she keeps down her food today

December 12, 2006 at 12:28 pm #20144AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. She’s already showered me twice today! We’re off to the peds this aft (don’t know why, it’s really pretty useless).
I’m just so scared that it’s not a virus. At least a virus has an end to it, but for us, reflux is probably going to be a permanent fixture, and if this is how it’s going to be it’s harder for me to stomach.
December 12, 2006 at 8:24 pm #20192AnonymousInactiveI think you need to go with your gut- Alana had fevers on and of for over a week, was lethargic and we had to wake her to feed (this was when she was about 10weeks). Anyway they kept on telling me she had a virus and it turned out she had a urinary tract infection which can turn out nasty in infants. So I always believe you should go with your gut now, if you are not happy, keep going to the Dr until you find one who is prepared to listen to your gut. Have they done blod tests, urine tests or anything? Fevers that occur one and of for a long period of time should really be investigated even if it does just turn out to be a virus!
December 12, 2006 at 8:31 pm #20194AnonymousInactiveDon’t mean to be a doomsayer or anything- but I heard in your message that you don’t think things are right, and you know Hailey best.
December 12, 2006 at 8:52 pm #20200AnonymousInactiveThanks for the advice. We saw the ped this afternoon. Said that he thinks the prior two weeks of nightly vomitting were from the post-nasal drip and her super exaggerated gag reflex. Then we had one week. Then he thinks on Monday she got another virus and the ear infection, and as it was clearing up she got another virus. He doesn’t think it’s roseola. He thinks it’s one of the enteroviruses. He looked at the rash and said that you often see that kind of rash with the enteroviruses and that they can also cause nausea and vomitting. He thinks that Hailey is a kid who every little illness or upset causes digestive upset to be worse. Since we’re doing sleep feeding at night, she’s taking more in at night, and that’s why we’re seeing more of the vomitting then. That’s his theory anyway. If she’s still vomitting by tomorrow, then he wants us to bring her to get assessed for dehydration, and take her for IV fluids to the ER. I hope it doesn’t reach that point, since he said she doesn’t need it now.
I’m also going to call the GI tomorrow. I want to try motility meds again and also periactin. Viruses are going to be part of her life, so it’s not acceptable that she’s puking everything up everytime she’s sick.
December 12, 2006 at 8:53 pm #20201AnonymousInactiveLori – Did you find out anything at the doctor? How is Hailey feeling?
Therese – Everytime I see Alana’s picture I just want to pick her up and squeeze her!!! She’s adorable! My mom would love her hair…she is always complaining that Sarah is bald and inspects her head for more hair everytime she visits.
December 12, 2006 at 9:13 pm #20209AnonymousInactiveLori – Guess we posted at almost the same time! Didn’t see your response when I asked. I am hopeful for you that the GI will have some good answers. I know how frustrated you are. I will be thinking of you and hope Hailey doesn’t need any IV fluids. We’re skating that thin line over here as well and it’s scary!!!

December 12, 2006 at 9:15 pm #20210AnonymousInactiveLori,
I’ll say a prayer for Hailey tonight….that she will improve and not need IV fluids. I was terrified of that for Myles…not the IV so much but for what else he might catch in the hospital. Like you said she doesn’t need anything else.
I thought you couldn’t get periactin in Canada. I think you’re idea about motility meds and periactin is a good one. I hope the doc goes for it.
Did she lose much weight?
December 12, 2006 at 9:52 pm #20215AnonymousInactiveI hope she is feeling better soon!
Isaac seems to get any virus that comes his way so I cannot even imagine if he was in daycare how hard it would be!
December 12, 2006 at 10:49 pm #20226AnonymousInactiveGoodluck, hope she is feeling better soon. It doesn’t quite seem fair that you have to deal with reflux, food allergies and “more chance of getting viruses” all at the same time really.
December 13, 2006 at 1:42 am #20234AnonymousInactiveOh goodness! I hope Hailey is doing better. Periactin has a been a lifesaver here. Hope it works for you. Last time Kayleigh got the “pukes” her ped said “well did she get her meds?” Yep I replied then she projected them all over the wall so what’s next! That’s how we got our last script for the periactin. Hopefully you won’t have to be so vivid with your ped. Good Luck and we’ll be praying for your whole family.
