Whew…………we got a call from the sitter yesterday and it turns out her little boy doesn’t have chicken pox after all. They ruled it out for two reasons 1) The amount of spots he had were too many at once to have been chicken pox. I guess it takes a few days to acquire the number of spots he only got in a few hours and 2) After a double dose of benadryl, his spots went away dramatically. Chicken Pox don’t do that.
The question is…what DID he have? The ped. thought it was just his reaction to some sort of virus. He hasn’t had a temp. the last two days so I’m waiting to hear if she is going to be open tomorrow. I’m just relieved that it’s not the chicken pox!
Part two of my question – When your little ones are sick, have you noticed that they won’t take their zegerid? We have been putting it in an ounce of formula, as always, but she won’t drink it anymore! ahhhhh! She hasn’t wanted to eat at all today…and that concerns me with her diarrhea, but I’m trying not to freak out about it. She doesn’t have a temp. or anything. So frustrating! It has been the past few days though that it’s a guessing game on whether she’ll drink her medicine bottle.
Just wanted to update everyone!
AmyDecember 10, 2006 at 3:27 pm #19962AnonymousInactivehey, when Trace was sick (for about 3 weeks!) he didnt have much of an appetite the first week. i normally sneak the syringe in the side of his mouth while he eats. sometimes though, he wouldnt eat much more than a few ounces, leaving me with a syringe still full of meds.
so i had to give it to him plain. basically, i laid him down flat, and distracted him with a toy, waved it around or whatever, and squirted it little by little in the back of his throat.
i dont like the idea of putting it in the bottle, because if they dont finish drinking, you waste meds.December 10, 2006 at 3:37 pm #19963AnonymousInactiveGlad to hear she wasn’t exposed to chicken pox. I’m not sure what that could have been. Maybe an allergic reaction to something?
Myles has had very little appetite while sick. He turns his nose up at just about everything until he gets overly thirsty. Does she still have diarrhea? With Myles the only way I could keep him hydrated these last few days was to spoon feed him small amts of fluid at frequent intervals. He’s still sick and not eating much but I think we’re turning the corner finally.
Like Natalia did with Trace, you may have to find a way to trick her into taking her meds while she’s sick.
Hopefully she’ll be feeling better and eating again soon. Please keep us posted.

She can’t keep it down when I syringe it, and so we have to give it in the bottle. I offer it and hope for the best. But it’s not the best option- she hasn’t had a full dose in a couple of days, and things haven’t been very good, to say the least.

December 11, 2006 at 9:28 pm #20090AnonymousInactiveHi! Another update. Turns out the “chicken pox” was an allergic reaction to some deer meat! (good guess Christine!) I guess he was allergic to one of the preservatives in it! Random! Im glad that figured it out though. I know the guessing game can be stressful! He is doing great now and is pretty much “back to normal”!
We are going on day 6 with diarrhea. I am calling the doctor tomorrow. Their office has been closed to relocate and they reopen tomorrow…thank goodness. Sarah is still refusing the bottle. She ate better today than yesterday, but still not “normal”. She wouldn’t take her night bottle again but I was able to give her about 2-3 tbsp. of some cereal. So at least it was a little piece of mind for me.
So stressful!

Maybe Sarah will surprise you and be much better tomorrow. I hope so.
