We went to our ped today for Ariella’s shots and I was telling him that it’s becoming a plain nightmare with Ariella’s reflux so he prescribed Reglan. Anyone used it for their babies? Is it prescribed for such young kids? Thank you
Reglan is really meant to be used as a motility drug for DGE. Some docs prescribe it for refluxers with the thought that moving things through the digestive system more quickly may reduce reflux symptoms. I’d be leery of it becuase it can have some serious neurological side effects.
My son was on Reglan when he was first diagnosed with reflux. I didn’t know about the side effects at the time, but he didn’t ever have a problem with it. It actually really helped him, but only for awhile. He’s on a different DGE med now – Erythromycin, which has really made a difference with his spitting up.
Does Ariella have signs of delayed gastric emptying? Or is she having pain from the reflux?
To everyone–yes, I have read up on Reglan on the internet and I have to admit that I was scared of what I was reading. I’m definitely not giving any to my baby…the side effects are scary!
Well, I’m sure it’s different for each baby, but the symptoms I know of are:
-Spitting up often & huge amounts (some spit up so much they lose weight) -Spitting up a long time after a meal -Lack of appetite or feeling full quickly
Taylor has been on Reglan for awhile now without any side effects. We are using it for her DGE and Prilosec for her reflux but the Reglan also can help with her reflux as well, by strengthing her pyloric spincter and moving the food through her system faster. Like Heather mentioned above, with Tay it wasn’t some much the spitting up it was the lack of appetite and feeling full quickly, she would only take 2oz over 30-45mins and would go for hours up to 6-7 hours without being hungry again. When Alexis was on it for her reflux we didn’t notice any difference so we stopped it, she didn’t have DGE and wasn’t a spitter she was a silent refluxer so Reglan didn’t help at all. Yes, there are a lot of side effects to the medication but sometimes in our case the only option left since we tried Tay on e-mycin first but she couldn’t handle it.Alexis’s mom2006-12-6 16:18:43
