I am just soooo mad it’s not even funny. As some of you might know we had our first ped GI appt last Tuesday and I was so hopeful that this dr will shine the light onto our situation with our daughter. Well, we to the appt and at the appt the nurse was really nice and she weighed Ariella, measured the height, asked us some questions and in the middle of our convo, was called out of the room and never came back. The dr came in with the first words “yes, it seems your baby has reflux”…So my husband and I looked at each other and I continued telling the dr the symptoms that I have been observing in our daughter’s behavior. You know what he tells me??? “you need to put away your magnifying glass” I told myself “ok, he must know better since he is a dr after all” Then he tells me “i’ve heard what you’re telling me a thousand times before and you need to understand that in all honesty, she’ll grow out of it eventually but meanwhile we’ll tx her with meds” So i ask him about PPIs and he says that he wouldn’t even CONSIDER PPIs for her b/c she’s way too young for them and that FDA didn’t approve the use for such young children. So I tell him that I’ve done some research and he interrupts me with the words “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing” By that time, I was already thinking that he’s just a jackass (excuse my french). Anyway, he prescribes Axid (Never heard of it) and I come home all upset with the outcome of the appt. Little did I know that it’ll only get better. First of all, he wrote the prescription in the wrong format (no pharmacy would fill the prescription b/c of that) and then my pharmacist (who’s my sister in law) tells me that the manufacturer can’t supply with the medication b/c they don’t manufacture it anymore!!! Meanwhile, I’ve called the dr and left messages and he never calls me back. I have two other appts set up for other drs and needless to say that I’m NEVER going back to this insensetive prick. Excuse me, ladies, I’m just so ticked off right now b/c we haven’t slept for the past 5 nights and we’re exhausted and my poor baby’s in pain. I guess I just need your kind words of encouragement. We’re going for another opinion this Thursday. And just to think that this dr came highly recommended…Unbelievable!

December 4, 2006 at 12:58 pm #19511AnonymousInactiveOh Marianna I am so sorry to hear that! You made the RIGHT decision by finding a new doctor!!!!!!! A little knowledge is the BEST thing because it saved my daughter and my sanity!!! If I hadn’t found this forum and other info, we’d still be in the same boat and our lives would be miserable. Stand up for what you want (DEMAND IT!) until you get it…she SHOULD be on a PPI and she should be put on one at the right dosage. These doctors don’t have to live at home with the screaming babies and “hearing it 1000 times before” doesn’t change each individual situation! GRRRRRR why do people have to be so insensitive!
Check Marci-kids.com about the “PPI not safe in infants” question. There is info. about that and maybe if you have that printed off and ready to go…it won’t be an issue with the next doctor.
Keep fightin for your little one!!!!
AmyDecember 4, 2006 at 2:05 pm #19515AnonymousInactiveI agree with everything Amy has said. If it weren’t for the knowledge I found here and at marci-kids my poor son would have lived a hellish first nine months. Yeah, they’ll outgrow it but does that mean their pain is a non-issue?
I’m glad you’ve found another doctor. Please consider printing as much of the marci-kids info as you can and bringing it along with you.
I wish you the best and hope this doctor will listen to you and have some compassion for your daughter.
Maybe a little Mylanata Cherry Supreme for now? It may give her some temporary relief until you get her on some good meds for her reflux.
December 4, 2006 at 10:09 pm #19557AnonymousInactiveYou are a saint for being able to keep from screaming at that doc. First thing Iwill say is don’t stop bf just bc a doc tells you to. Too often moms of reflux babies are told to stop bf, but it is actually better for them to be bf. Also I have heard that none of the reflux meds are fda approved for under a year. Docs. usually just pull that one out of their #$% so that you will do whatever meds thier reps want them to promote. Maybe ask your sister-in-law about that. I haven’t done any research on it, but it makes sense to me. Honestly I’m not even sure how to find that out. If you do find out the answer pm me and let me know.
December 4, 2006 at 10:13 pm #19558AnonymousInactiveJustice’smom—I didn’t ask her about the FDA approval but she did tell me that Zantac is the most popular med being prescribed for such young children.
December 4, 2006 at 11:00 pm #19564AnonymousInactiveI just checked the fda site and boy was that hard. All I could come up with is that in 2001 the only reflux med that was approved was zantac. Also I don’t know what they mean when they say infant. That could mean to them a year and older. If you want to do some more research on that you can.
By the way, I’m so sorry you are going through what you are. We are at 7 mos now and I still feel like pulling my hair out sometimes. Justice doesn’t seem to be in pain anymore, but he does not sleep well at all. I am up and down the stairs all night long until I go to bed. That is one thing I have learned through all this is to not expect the sleep. He will sleep one of these days. Actually what helps us a lot is Justice nurses all night long. I never thought I could sleep that way, but it is so much better than being up every 30 min. I don’t know what keeps Justice up, but nursing him helps him to sleep so that is what I do. I do have to prop him up on my arm. I tell you that just in case you wanted to try it. If your baby isn’t on meds yet just laying flat may make her spit up in your bed.
Keep on pushing and fighting and always remember we are here for you. If noone else understands we do.
December 5, 2006 at 12:15 am #19567AnonymousInactiveHi Marianna,
I’m so sorry you were treated so badly by this doctor, and your little girl has to suffer because of it. I’m so glad you were able to get in with another doctor though. I just pray this one’s better.I just wanted to mention – if all else fails, and you still can’t get a prescription for a PPI, try a family practice doctor. From my experience, they seem a lot more open minded about PPIs and infants.
Good luck!!

I think you were very restrained not calling him an insensitive prick to his face. Once they are as jaded as him they should get out of the business I say!
Ditto to what Heather said- it was my general practioner- same as your family Dr that was prepared to up the dose of prevacid (and actually prescribe it in the first place- it is not approved for kids in Aus- only losec is). Give them a go!
December 5, 2006 at 9:59 am #19581AnonymousInactiveMyles was treated by our family practitioner as well. She had no problem putting him on Prevacid….but it did take some convincing and the marci-kids info to sway her towards the higher dose. ndrose2006-12-5 12:7:10
December 5, 2006 at 10:25 am #19583AnonymousInactiveThank you ladies for your kind words and understanding. I do have more appts set up with two more drs. I just hope that we’ll be able to get more answers and solutions…When you say family practicioner, do you mean physician? Did your physician prescribed meds without examining your babies? I don’t know how it works with physicians…All I know is that our pediatrician is not getting involved in this too much. All he did was try putting her on formulas but it actually made it worse so I switched her back to the breast milk telling him that I don’t care what he thinks but I just know that my milk’s better for her (I’m sure I wasn’t his favorite mommy at the moment but I don’t care about these drs anymore). Anyway, we’re going for another appt this Thursday, I’ll keep you ladies posted.
December 5, 2006 at 12:10 pm #19591AnonymousInactiveA family practitioner is also called a family doctor. My doc was able to diagnose both of my refluxers by their symptoms and she was very willing to prescribe reflux meds. She never discouraged me to stop breast feeding. Personally I think that should be a last resort for a mom who is nursing and wants to continue.
Good luck with you appointments.
December 6, 2006 at 1:18 am #19664AnonymousInactiveMarianna, I wanted to tell you that my first experience with a pediatric GI was TERRIBLE as well. He kept telling me that Aidan didn’t have severe reflux, and he wanted to take her off the Prevacid at 4 months! If we hadn’t switched doctors, I don’t know where we’d be with Aidan’s reflux considering how severe it actually was/is. Yes, most babies do grow out of it, but certainly not all (Aidan and many babies here are living proof of that). And it utterly ridiculous and careless for a doctor, especially a GI, to treat your daughter’s case so generically. I also wanted to tell you that Aidan was put on Prevacid by the time she was 12 weeks old. She was diagnosed with reflux at 2.5 weeks, and it took me that long to convince the doctors that I wasn’t crazy.
(((Hugs!))) Keep fighting for your little one’s relief. I also agree with the previous posters about finding a family doctor or general practicioner. Aidan’s PCP is a family doc, and he is fantastic about the reflux stuff. His son had it. So, he’s very understanding about it. Although he said he couldn’t continue to treat Aidan’s reflux because of it’s severity, he was the one who started the treatment and put her on the Prevacid when the first GI wouldn’t.
