. I am MAD – I am normally not a MAD person, I normally can keep my feelings fairly well controlled but I am MAD today.
Abby has been doing so great lately. That was until last night anyway. She went to bed around 7:00 like usual and was sleeping when we went to bed around 10:00. 10:15 came around and she was coughing horribly, screaming and having a hard time breathing. We called our family doc (who is our doc for basically everything) and while my husband was on the phone with him, she went into one of the coughing spells and the doc told us to take her immediately to the ER (30 miles away). So hubby stayed home with Kayla and off Abby and I went. She sounded so horrible. It was like croup times 10 – Kayla had had croup before and this was way worse. So we get to the ER. The nurse was very pleasant and helpful, then the doctor came in. I really don’t know if any of the ER docs are able to speak English and I don’t think this one understood it either as he didn’t listen to a word I said. He listened to her lungs and said they sounded fine. They did an RSV test and flu test and they both came back negative. He then ordered a chest xray which he said looked good so then he said it must be the reflux causing her to cough. I AM SORRY, but her reflux is under great control and she has never almost quit breathing due to coughing. He said that reflux can cause a slight cough and that is what he thought it was (never mind that it sounds like Abby is coughing up a lung at this point and the nurses outside the exam room can hear her breathing. So they gave her a breathing treatment and sent us home at 2:00 and told us to follow up with our regular doc the next day. The rest of the night was terrible and she took a little nap from 8-10 and when I got her up, she felt so hot. I took her temp and it was 103. I had made an appointment for 3:30 as that was all they had open so I called our doctors nurse (who is so great) and said I wanted her seen sooner, so we were able to get in at 1:30 instead. When we got there, the fever was down (thanks to tylenol and motrin) but the doc heard her coughing again. He looked at the records from the night before and said “Oh, I see she has PNEUMONIA”. My blood pressure immediately went up and I said “what? Pneumonia – no one last night told me that”. To make an already too long story a little shorter, needless to say, she is now on neb treatments, prednisone, and an antibiotic. I am gearing up to call the hospital administration to voice a complaint and am still very angry. Our doc asked if they gave her a prescription to help through the night and into today and when I said no, I don’t think he could believe it. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR – enough said – I have to get on the phone and make my complaint. By the way, Abby seems to be feeling pretty good right now – just had her first neb treatment and the tylenol and motrin are working their magic. Now Momma needs something to calm herself down
Thanks for listening

Why would they not give her something for it??????? GRRRRRRRRR! THANK GOODNESS you have a great regular ped! I am so sorry you had to go through that! Was the weather OK for you to drive to the ER? Can’t remember where you live but most of the midwest was snow/ice!
I hope Abby gets to feeling better soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’d be making a complaint if I were you too!!!!!!!!!!!

December 1, 2006 at 9:02 pm #19391AnonymousInactivePoor baby. And poor mommy. That must have been horrible for you and her, and I definitely would file a complaint.
I hope Abby is feeling better very soon. Just so you know Prednisone can really make you feel lousy and extremely irritable. I’ve been on it a few times. It will help her breathing alot but it may make her really crabby. How long does she have to take it?
Did she seem sick previously, or did it come on that quick?
Hugs for Abby

When we gave Abby the Prednisone tonight, she barfed it back up (along with her supper). We tried again later and the same thing happened. I called our doc and he said that we can bring her in tomorrow and they can give her a shot instead. Normally, I hate the thought of another needle, but I think in the long run it would be better. I think the taste of the Prednisone was what is making her gag and throw up. It’s really gross.
Well, at least she is asleep now – hope she stays that way until morning!!

What a good baby she is! She goes to bed even when she’s sick! I hope she sleeps all night and wakes up feeling better tomorrow.
December 2, 2006 at 2:56 am #19405AnonymousInactiveSo sorry for you all. I Can’t believe they let a 10 month old with pneumonia go home, let alone go home with no treatment!
I work in health and my comment is complain complain complain (in a very composed and articulate manner). To many people don’t voice concerns these days and without those voices nothing can change. I always advise my clients to lodge complaints ( I am often as horrified as they are with there treatment- in other parts of the same hospital I work for unfortunately!!!)
I hope she is feeling better- it is suprising how quickly they bounce back!

Alana is beautiful – I just love her hair – very squeezable cheeks too
The people I needed to voice my concerns to were “out of the office” when I tried calling so I will be pursuing it on Monday. Thanks for your advice!!

December 2, 2006 at 3:52 pm #19419AnonymousInactiveThe nurse at our family docs office got all of the info from the ER prior to us coming in for the appointment so our doc could take a look at it. Crazy, crazy, crazy – I’m just glad Abby is finally starting to feel a little better.

December 2, 2006 at 7:50 pm #19422AnonymousInactiveThe Kids ER here sends a report every time a child comes in to the family doc so it can be on their record. That said, I can’t BELIEVE they didn’t tell you she had pnemonia! That’s just horrible, I would deff. Call and voice a complaint!!!!
December 2, 2006 at 10:23 pm #19425AnonymousInactiveThanks Robin- can you believe she was born with this hair- it just keeps growing and growing. It is the topic of conversation wherever we go!
Oh, and I would put my complaint- or suggestion for better service to you the consumer- in writing; that way someone will have to take it seriously. I don’t know how mad you are but you could consider cc’ing it to your local politician as well?
I wonder if it is standard practice to send an infant with pneumonia home? That just sounds to bizarre to me.
December 3, 2006 at 10:09 am #19435AnonymousInactiveRobin,
I agree about putting it in writing. I think your complaint will be taken more seriously that way.
December 3, 2006 at 10:29 am #19436AnonymousInactiveThat’s funny because just before I came online this morning to check the board, my fingers were composing a letter. Great minds must think alike
