I had to take Isaac to his ped gi again b/c of the reflux reccuring recently. He is having a hard time sleeping and is choking alot. I hear alot of reswallowing and occasionally he throws up. The dr said that Isaac is still allergic to milk and soy and he thinks that is what is causing the reflux b/c of the timeline of the transition from nutramigento milk. So he is on a milk and soy free diet again though it will be much harder this time around. I have to take him to a nutritionist now too. He is on Rice milk which doesn’t have enough fat content for his age so he is on a high fat diet too. If he loses weight or is not gaining enough he will be put on neocate so we are really hoping that this works out. The nutritionist said that he has to have 5 small meals a day and I have to keep a food diary for a while and keep turning it in to her until I get the hang of it. I am feeling really overwhelmed with all of this so hopefully it will be easier than it sounds.
November 22, 2006 at 6:51 pm #18791AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry Sarah. I hope that it’s not too hard of a change. The food diary isn’t that bad… we’ve done one for a while. I don’t know about the 5 meals a day. Is that 3 meals and two snacks? Good luck and keep us posted. I have to keep this short b/c I have to run, but I’l post more later.
November 22, 2006 at 7:30 pm #18792AnonymousInactiveOh Sarah i am sorry to hear… I hope that once he is off the milk, he starts to feel better and you see an increase ini his appetite
November 22, 2006 at 8:03 pm #18794AnonymousInactiveHave you discussed with the nutritionist addiing something like Duocal to his diet?? I guess once you do the food diaries, she will be able to tell you if he is not eating enough or if he needs more fat etc… ((HUGS)) Sorry had to run before to feed my little man
November 22, 2006 at 8:51 pm #18797AnonymousInactiveYes, Sarah, Thais has a good idea in the duocal. If they find that he isn’t getting enough calories, maybe that would be a good idea. Alternately, do they have a soy/dairy free form of a pediasure type supplement? They are usually pretty calorie dense compared to regular milk.
Sorry to hear this news. I know how much you hoped that he was beyond the reflux horrors. Given this information, does the ped want to keep him on the zantac, or go back to the protonix?
BIG BIG HUGS!
November 22, 2006 at 8:53 pm #18798AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear his reflux is back and he can’t tolerate milk or soy. It must be a real bummer for you, and I can see how keeping the food diary and turning it over for inspection could be stressful, but you’ll probably get used to it and the nutritionist will have lots of valuabe information and advice. Nutritionists are my favorite health care professional because they have so much valuable knowledge to share. I hope the one you have is as friendly and helpful as the nutritionists I’ve met.
I hope Isaac eats well on his new diet and he and keeps his weight up. Good luck, and Happy Thanksgiving.
November 22, 2006 at 10:40 pm #18808AnonymousInactiveLori-No it is five small meals a day-and I am thinking I am lucky to get 2 in him! lol I don’t think that there is a pediasure that is milk/soy free. For now he is staying on Zantac b/c we are hoping the diet alone will fix the problem but I am able to call at any time to get prevacid (the insurance will not cover protonix).
Thais-At this point they don’t want to jump straight into the weight gainers but if his weight doesn’t go up they will. She said something about sprinkling it on his food-the neocate.
Christine-The nutritionist was so nice and Isaac really liked her!
November 23, 2006 at 7:50 am #18820AnonymousInactiveI have heard that E28 (the product made my Neocate for toddlers, i think it has some kind of flavor) is pretty well accepted (a mom who is at a feeding clinic was told this…);
November 24, 2006 at 12:24 am #18856AnonymousInactiveI hope he feels better soon as the milk leaves his system.
November 28, 2006 at 12:36 pm #19165AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear this but I hope the milk/soy free diet is the answer and gets
Isaac feeling better again soon. Will he eat avocado? Peanut butter? Other
high fat foods?
November 28, 2006 at 2:56 pm #19185AnonymousInactiveKaren, I ordered avacado oil and it should be in this evening and I am hoping that he really likes it! We are not allowed to give him Peanuts b/c of his allergy problems at least until he is 2 years old. We have been using the “safe” butter alot and lots of oil to cook in for him but we want some healthier fats to try. How is Marisa doing?
November 29, 2006 at 1:15 pm #19260AnonymousInactiveFingers crossed that he likes the avocado oil. What about coconut oil too?
Marisa is doing pretty well. She just got over a wicked virus that was
compounded by teething (working on eye teeth) and shots but the fever is
gone now. She’s still really tired and cranky but seems to be on the mend,
knock wood. Still only eats a few foods but I don’t expect that to change any
time soon…
