I am so tired of the hospital, the doctors offices, all of the lab tests, ect….
Let me tell you about my week Monday I got food poisoning and spent all night in the bathroom. Wednesday I broke down and took Lance to the doctor (he had been sick for almost 2 weeks, kept thinking it was viral and it would go away on its own) So, I took him to the doctor and (I now feel like a horrible mother) he had a sinus infection, 2 ear infections, congestion in his chest and was wheezing pretty badly. He was put on septra, xopenex, orapred, and xiratuss. Oh and he had a fever in the office of 102.2 that I had not noticed. He did not seem that sick to me
Then the next morning, he comes out and tells me that his heart feels funny and it is beating relly fast. I take his pulse (his heart was beating so fast that all I had to do was put my hand on his chest) his pulse is 179, so back to the doctor we go. I get there and he wakes up screaming that his chest is hurting, so I snatch him up rush him in the doctors office (thankfully I work there so they dont think that I am too crazy) He is still screaming and holding his chest. One of the doctors takes him from my arms and looks at me and says “where is Samantha?” OH CRAP, I forgot her in the car!!! So I go get Samantha and by the time I get back in, Lance is calmer his heartrate is 120 now. The doctor did a chest x-ray and decided that Lance had some plueracy in his chest that was causing the pain and he had some congestion in his chest, so continue the antibiotics. NO sooner had I walked in the door at home I realize that Samantha is running a 102.7 fever and with her nutropenia, the rule is if her fever is over 101 we have to be seen. SO I call the oncoligist and she tell me to go to the ER. Away we go, with my other child sick and in tow. I call DH to come and get Lance and take him home, he says ok he will meet me at the hospital. I get to the hospital, no DH. I call him and he says, (I am not joking) “oh, you were going right now?” I tell him just get down here. I get into the ER, we go in through the “back door” which is actually the ambulance entrance and the room is not quite ready yet for us. So I am standing in the ambulance entrance with my DD and my DS who is 7 years old and I am not really sure what could come through those doors at any minute that I do not want him to have to witness. They get us to a room and my cell phone rings, it is DH, the receptionist at the front is rudely telling him we are not here and there is no such thing as a “back door” Finally he gets to us and him and Lance go home. The doctor comes in and very luckily for me it is the mom of one of my patients. She was so nice to us. Samantha was given IV antibiotics, her port was cultured, and they did some lab work. We were sent home with instructions to call the H/O office in the morning and return if things got worse.
The next morning, I call the office and they let me know that she wont be able to be seen in the office, but if she gets worse, call and they would give me further instructions. She slept (after waking up at 7am) from 8-12 on my chest. At noon, I thought she felt really hot, so I took her temp and it was 105.7 and she was just listless. She looked horrible. I tried to call the oncoligist, but it was their lunch and I could not even get a hold of a doctor. So I decided to take her back to the ER. (thankfully Lance was back in school yesterday) WE go to the ER, she is seen again and was given another IV dose of antibiotics, a big bolus of IV fluids (500mL over 2 hours), another culture of her port, and they watched her for a while. She perked up a bit after she got the fluids, so they let us go home.
She seems to be doing a little better today, she is still running fever but it is controlled alternating Tyl & motrin. Lance seems to be all better. NOw the problem is that DH is sick, which is almost worse than the kids. He is running fever with cough and congestion.
CALGON TAKE ME AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well if you made it to the end of this, thanks for listening. I feel better just letting it off my chest.

February 19, 2006 at 7:50 am #1888AnonymousInactiveOh my gosh Janice – I’m so sorry to hear about everyone being sick and
having such a rough week. I hope you all feel better soon and will be
thinking of you.February 19, 2006 at 9:15 am #1891AnonymousInactiveI can’t beleive they let her go home after having a temp of over 105. Isn’t that a little bit close to start having seizures? I probably would have passed out or had a panic attack. I swear we cannot get good emergency room care around here! I have to go all the way down to children’s Dallas, then they always admit her just to be cautious. Hang in there, I hope everyone is over the worst and things will get better very soon! Sarah
February 19, 2006 at 10:37 am #1898AnonymousInactiveSo sorry for you all – especially you, Janice! I know from experience that once DH is sick, that’s worse than everyone else combined! Glad to hear Samantha and Lance are better! Please take care of yourself (I know – easier said than done!)
