hey guys, A friend of mine who is an rn who works with adults with reflux told me that if you lay on your right side, then gravity is working for you and helping keep the valve(or whatever the thing is called that allows them to reflux, I forgot excactly) closed. She suggested keeping Aidan elevated but on his right side after he eats so gravity is working in his favor…not sure if it’ll work but I thought it was interesting…
I have reflux and I feel better when I lay on my right side. Also, by being on your right side, stomach emptying time is improved because gravity helps it dump into your small intestine.
My ped GI actually published a study she did on this with some other GI’s in our city. They studied babies with reflux and measured the amount of times that they refluxed in different positions. Here is the link.
i have always been told that reflux is lessened by lying on your LEFT side. i have had reflux problems for over 14 years—and on my right side i have trouble with stuff coming back up. the link that amber posted talks about lying on the left side.
Our ped recommended the left side and I could tell a difference with
Zach once he started rolling over. Every time he would wake from
what I knew was reflux, he was on his right side. If I could keep
him on his left, we had a good night!
Isn’t this interesting … no wonder Nate always ate better for me than his dad … even though we know you’re supposed to alternate sides, even for a bottle fed baby, I settled into keeping Nate’s head to my right, which kept him leaning more on his left side. My husband assumed the opposite pose. I could always get him to eat more … hmmmmmm!
