Well, today we got Aidan’s convertible seat. I’m pretty excited about it. We got the Evenflo Triumph Premire.
What is everyone else using?
November 8, 2006 at 8:45 pm #17474AnonymousInactiveI was always excited to move my babies into a convertible seat, too.You get tired of squishing them into those little infant carriers, and they start to look uncomfortable in them.
We use the Britax Wizards. I love them!!
I love your signature and picture of Aidan. How did you do that?
November 8, 2006 at 9:52 pm #17478AnonymousInactiveWe love our Britax Wizards! We’re getting ready to buy Alex’s and I’m dreading the cost, but they are great seats.
November 8, 2006 at 11:25 pm #17480AnonymousInactiveChristine, I make signatures for people on different message boards in my spare time. I use Paint Shop Pro to do them. I love the program. I can do pretty much anything I want with a picture with it. Here is a link where you can see my work:

November 9, 2006 at 12:08 am #17489AnonymousInactiveWhats a convertible seat- do you mean a car seat that can be put in reverse facing position and front facing position?
I have noticed on a few US websites they say to have them in reverse facing pos until 12 months in US- most people over in Aus put them front facing at about 6 months or 8 kilos- as soon as they meet the miniumum weight basically.
Amanda- the website was fantastic- you are very talented!
November 9, 2006 at 12:23 am #17490AnonymousInactiveThanks!
Yes, the seat we bought can be both rear and forward facing. Here you aren’t supposed to turn them forward facing until the baby is a year and about 20 lb, but not everyone follows that. Aidan will be rear facing for awhile though.
November 9, 2006 at 8:41 am #17492hellbenntKeymasterI kept Jonah rear facing in his Britax until he was 2 yrs old (a bit past then, even!)
It is safer and the seat (Britax) allows for it.
all my friends thought I was nuts, heck, ‘mean’ even, but you know what? he didn’t care (in fact he cried/freaked out when we finally did change him to forward facing) & it’s safer, so to heck with everyone else!! Safety First!
ps: I am going to keep my kids in 5pt harnesses as long as possible! I don’t know if this is a hoax or not, (hard to believe it would be) but it certainly got to me. Warning warning warning- VERY VERY SAD (about booster seats): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azgBhZfcqaQ

November 9, 2006 at 9:35 am #17505AnonymousInactiveOMG Laura. I can’t stop crying.
We kept Sarah rear facing until she was 19 months old. I always planned to keep her rear facing as long as possible. We had her carseat installed when she was younger by a police woman who was a big advocate of car seat safety. She took many courses and trained others on how to do a proper installation. She said that rear facing is much safer than forward facing because of the anatomy of a car crash. She said that this is true as long as the child’s feet are not touching the back seat when in the rear-facing car seat. We were told that if the feet are touching the back seat, then it will prevent the car seat from properly flipping back which is supposed to protect the child. She also said that before turning them around, it’s not just a weight and/or age requirement, but that the child should be able to support themselves upright independently in standing.
She also told us that the car seats that have that bar that come down over the front (I don’t know the brand) are very dangerous and have actually been implicated in causing deaths and head injuries in car crashes.
One more thing, is that it’s not enough that the seat is properly installed, but that the straps also have to properly adjusted. I often yell at my husband because he keeps the straps too loose (especially in the winter) and doesn’t pull the harness up high enough (armpit level). If the straps aren’t adjusted properly then they can fly right out of the opening.
Don’t know how true the info is, but I considered her a very reliable source. Just thought I’d pass it on.
November 9, 2006 at 9:49 am #17508November 9, 2006 at 10:09 am #17513AnonymousInactiveThanks. It does say in there that it doesn’t matter if the child’s legs touch the back of the seat or are bent.
November 9, 2006 at 10:11 am #17514hellbenntKeymasterI didn’t even see that, lol
I just put the link for reference in general
and thank you for the strap info- so true!
November 9, 2006 at 10:13 am #17515AnonymousInactiveOMG…..How sad. I agree about the five point harness and that’s why I buy the Britax Seats. They can be used rear facing up to 30 lbs. and forward facing with the five point harness up to 80 pounds. I recently put Liza into a Britax Booster and moved Myles into the Wizard, but after seeing that video I think I’m going to buy her another Convertible seat with a five point harness.
Thanks for the link, Laura. So sad, but very important for all of us to know.
Lori, Myles’ feet do touch the back of the car’s seat when he is rear facing…..I don’t understand exactly what the police officer told you about that, but I always wondered if it was a bad thing. If the seat is properly installed, it shouldn’t budge in a crash, so what did she mean about the seat won’t be able to flip back?
To everyone else. I’ve read lots about this (five point harness versus booster seat for kids over 40lbs) and I definitely think the five point harness is best. Britax makes seats that can be used up to 80 lbs and they are LATCH equipped. BUT you have to read the instructions carefully because they say the car’s anchors may not be strong enough to hold a child over a certain weight in a convertible seat, and that this depends on the car, not the seat. It can never be simple, can it? That’s why I moved Liza to the booster. I could not find any information about whether or not our van’s anchors could support the Britax seat with a child over 40 lbs. No one at Toyota seems to have the answer, and of course it’s not in the manual. I wish these darn car manufactures would just start making built in safety seats that conform to current safety standards. They just don’t seem to care about chldren.
November 9, 2006 at 10:47 am #17519AnonymousInactiveWe use the Britax roundabout i think… i belive the one that has been discontinued but not sure… Matthew is 15months old and he is still rear-facing… and hopefully will for some time. our ped is adamant about not turning babies until they are AT LEAST 18months old. He said something to us about the head still being so disproportionate in size to teh body, that in a crash, their necks are worse off if they are facing forward??? also said that it does not matter if they feet are touching the seat.
November 9, 2006 at 10:49 am #17520AnonymousInactiveAmanda – i love all the work you have done – it is beautiful!!
November 9, 2006 at 11:29 am #17521AnonymousInactiveChristine, the link that Laura gave says that it doesn’t matter if the feet are touching. As for what she was talking about, she showed me a demonstration of what’s supposed to happen to the car seat. She said that when they’re installed correctly there should be no side to side movement, but that there should be up and down movement. She said that they’re actually designed so that the child will be strapped tightly into the seat and will move with the seat- according to her the seat should be able to move up and down, so that in the worst case the seat would almost turn into itself like a “turtle shell”. She said that’s why tethers that anchor the car set to the floor of the car should not be used.
