woohoo, I’m very proud to say that I accomplished MAKING our ped give Austin and Aidan their flu shots today (Aidan will need another in a month though), we have medicaid and aparently if you have any kind of gov’t assisted insurance, then you have to wait until the “special batch” of flu shots arrive on december 1st(or whenever they decide to ship thm out), meanwhile anyone who has private insurance can get theirs whenever!!! Well, I made a few calls to both medicaid and 2 calls to his dr telling them to look at my older son’s chart (asthma, bouts of pnemonia and bronchitus etc etc), and telling them we would PAY for the friggen shots, the first time I called I was told that legally we couldn’t pay for them..uhhh…WHAT? Then they called me back and told me that I could indeed pay for the shots (duh). They only had 25 left for Austin’s age so we went and got them today.
I just think it’s a crock of that I had to work this hard to get them flu shots just b/c we don’t have private insurance, when my sister and her kids walked in for their yearly checkups didn’t even ASK for the shots and were just given them anyway!!!!!! Don’t get me wrong I do feel very greatful that we have assistance to help us medically, but things like this just get under my skin.

November 8, 2006 at 4:48 pm #17454AnonymousInactiveI’m glad you were finally able to get them. I didn’t realize they could be that hard to get??? Here, you can walk into a grocery store or a pharmacy and pay to get one…that is, if you don’t want to go to your doctor.
November 8, 2006 at 8:33 pm #17471AnonymousInactiveGood job, Jill! Lots of moms would have just thrown up their hands and accepted it. Flu shots in December? By then the flu could be rampant and it may be too late. That’s why it’s recommended to get the shot in October!!
Here the County Health Dept gives shots to any child under the age of 6 for $8 regardless of whether you have private insurance, or no insurance. They don’t even ask about insurance. And they had the shots ready to go the first week of October. Maybe look into that next year.
November 8, 2006 at 9:38 pm #17476AnonymousInactiveyou can get them other places here, but my older son won’t go any other place but “his” dr without a HUGE blowout fight(it’s fun to watch us take him to t he children’s emergency room when he gets sick!!).
The hubby and I are going to wherever we can find them (probably the health dept like you said christine, although last time I checked they were out too!!!) We had appts for the 12th of october and the ped canceled and said call back at the end of Oct. b/c they didn’t have ANY shots in, medicaid or otherwise!!!! They just got them in november 1st, we are hopeing to have insurance for the kids by next year.

November 8, 2006 at 11:30 pm #17482AnonymousInactiveThat does seem ridiculous that they would make you wait.

November 8, 2006 at 11:40 pm #17484AnonymousInactiveI forgot to make Aidan’s next appt, if it’s their first flu shot they need a booster a month after the first one, I am SO hopeing that there won’t be any issues when I call to get his booster, actually I’m thinking they might do it at his 1 year checkup…
November 8, 2006 at 11:58 pm #17486AnonymousInactiveWe’re doing Aidan’s 2nd dose at her 9th month check up next month.
November 9, 2006 at 9:01 am #17497AnonymousInactiveI just got mine yesterday and I’m calling the ped in a few minutes to find out for the kids. Actually, our vaccine still isn’t readily available… I only got it b/c I work at a hospital. (And I do have to say that my arm is quite sore today, so if your little ones are crabby after, you might want to give some pain reliever.)
