I fed Brian avocado tonight for the first time, and he likes it, I am so happy. I am counting his cal intake every day, so do you know how much cal in 1oz of avocado? Beside good fat, what other nutrient is in avocado?
I heard that mushroom has lots of protein in it, is that true? He is 13 month now, is it safe to offer him some mushroom?
Thank you.
February 16, 2006 at 9:24 pm #1731hellbenntKeymasteravocado has good fat, & it’s a fruit (has the one seed/pit)
“Though the fruit does have a markedly higher fat content than most other fruit, most of the fat in avocados is monounsaturated fat, which is considered healthy in the human diet. A whole medium Avocado contains approximately 25% of the Daily Value of saturated fat. Avocados also have 60% more potassium than bananas.
The flesh is typically greenish yellow to golden yellow when ripe. The flesh oxidizes and turns brown quickly after exposure to air. To prevent this, a lime or lemon juice can be added to avocados after they are peeled; vitamin C in the juice acts as an antioxidant. The avocado is very popular in vegetarian cuisine, making a substitute for meats in sandwiches and salads because of the high fat content. The fruit is not sweet, but fatty, flavorful, and of smooth, almost creamy texture. It is used as the base for the Mexican dip known as guacamole, as well as a filling for several kinds of sushi, including California rolls. Avocado is popular in chicken dishes and as a spread on toast, served with salt and pepper. In Brazil and Vietnam, avocados are frequently used for milk-shakes and occasionally added to ice cream and in the Philippines, a dessert drink is made with sugar, milk, and pureed avocado.”

February 17, 2006 at 8:03 am #1743AnonymousInactiveSharon, I am so happy that Brian is doing so well. It seems like overnight he went from not taking any solids, do eating quite well!
February 17, 2006 at 5:00 pm #1772AnonymousInactiveLaura – Thank you so much for all the information.
Lori – Thank you. After increasing his reglan dose these past weekend, Brian is eating solid (puree) more willingly, and he is also more willingly to try new food, but he still need distraction while eating, and he does not want to drink formula except the moring and night bottle (I will post later for help), so feeding him is not without stress, frustration and time. Has Hailey try motility drug before?

February 17, 2006 at 5:11 pm #1778AnonymousInactiveWe tried domperidone/motilium with ther once, but it didn’t do anything. I was thinking of trying it again. Problem is we have to get it compounded, and after all this garbage with how to compound meds, I really don’t feel like I can trust a compound pharmacist to know how to compound the meds correctly. I don’t know if there’s stability issues with it like with a PPI. Also, Hailey hates all meds now, and will purposely gag them up and puke all over if she sees the syringe. It’s quite a horrible situation. I’ve tried everything possible but I still can’t get her to keep them down.
February 17, 2006 at 5:26 pm #1783AnonymousInactiveSharon,
Glad to hear that Brian is loving his solids. YAY!!
Mushrooms are a good source of vegetable protein and they are easily digested. They dont have as much protein as most beans though. White cap mushrooms have more protein than any of the other types. However, shiitake and maitake mushrooms are loaded with “good for you” nutrients that help boost the immune system. Mushrooms are very low in calories though, so I’d load them down with some butter if you are wanting to increase his calories. As far as it being safe for Brian, I really dont know about that one. Mushrooms are bascially a fungus and some people are allergic to fungus. I guess I’d check with your doc first since it could be a potential allergen.
