Inactivehi everyone,
i have asked a couple moms this question, but i am still not sure as to what the solution is. my son is almost 5 mos. old and on alimentum, and he is still refluxing. not just refluxing but it’s still acidic many of the times. also he squirms and moves really weird all night long, some of the times it wakes him up out of no where. anyhow… the good thing is is that he is not in pain at all.. he doesnt cry when he spits up and isnt too cranky all day… (unless he is tired)… compared to the first couple of months of his life when he cried ALL the time. sooo..
what is it? should i be concerned that he is still producing acid, even if not in pain? and he has no other signs of mspi…. do u think he needs to be on alimentum? i cant tell if i should keep him on it or not( he’s been on it for 2 mos.)or do you think his meds need to be changed?(the doc won’t increase them). or do nothing at all??;)

the fact that you are still smelling acid is an indicator that the med dose needs to be increased. maybe you can fax your doc the marci-kids.com info about PPI’s.November 5, 2006 at 3:46 pm #17230Inactivehey,
ohh i really dont think he is in pain, he just seems so happy all day, and never even blinks when he spitups..but i do agree that there is something wrong at night time.. even though he doesnt cry.. so, i did tell the GI once about marci-kids when i was talking about the dosing… and the nurse got an attitude saying well “who are they?”, and that its not what they go by… i really dont think they will budge.. but i’ll try.. sooo you think its a med problem and not an intolerance? he just doesnt have any other symptoms at all…

it sounds like he is having brearthrough acid problems at night…November 5, 2006 at 7:11 pm #17236InactiveYou know, he might not be in pain, but the acid might still be uncomfortable. I definitely don’t think it would hurt to try a higher dose. You might try going to a family practice doctor. That’s where we got our higher prevacid dose. They seem to be a little more open minded with PPI dosing (I think because they treat adults all the time for it maybe?) Anyway, that might be something to try. Good luck!
November 5, 2006 at 7:14 pm #17237InactiveThey are funny these babies- I don’t have any trouble with reflux at night at all, Alana sleeps through from 9.30 to 5.30. But boy do we have problems during the day. Moaning and groaning and spewing and sqealing!
They are all different, so maybe he is having more pain during the night and not during the day. Who knows why these little buggers have their funny little patterns!
Is he in a regular pooing pattern? One thing I have wondered about with the whole allergy thing, is are they more affected by it when it is “sliding” through the intestines and things are getting sucked out into the system? Eg if he poos in the morning, is it during the night that the proteins are entering his system and the immune system reacts and he is squirmy. This might be a bit far out, but it is just something I wondered. Our digestive systems slow down overnight, not sure if babies do, but if they are slower, more gets drawn out, more reaction. Anyway, just a thought… Anyone have any comment on my theory – to much time to think maybe (LOL)
Is alimentum an elemental formula or just hypoallergic- cause if it is the later, then it is not really testing the whole protein allergy stuff.
November 5, 2006 at 7:51 pm #17241Inactivewell, i dont think its just at night where he is uncomfortable.. it seems to be whenever he goes to sleep.. like his naps.. he squirms and wakes up after a half hour!!! but otherwise during the day he is great and happy…. ugh. i would love to change his formula to goodstart, we just cant afford the alimentum if its for nothing.
but i am nervous that he is intolerant and the protiens will build back up… to any of the experts…he poops reguarly, has never really had any gas and doesnt act like he is in any stomach pain, and has no rashes, except miner dry skin on his legs, but my mom said i had that too…. if he doesnt sound like mspi, please let me know

my son couldnt tolerate it. but he was miserable all day long from it. he also had mucous in stools and reflux was horrendous even though he was on a high dose of PPI.i truly think a higher med dose could help him out….

Keymasterthere was a mom who posted, lovemysophia, and she swore the main symptom of mspi that she noticed was what you’re describing for sleep…you can search & read her posts (search button is in upper right hand corner of the screen)
November 5, 2006 at 9:00 pm #17247InactiveI’d defintely work on getting his Prevacid increased. 15 mg is a pretty low dose. I’d try that first before even considering changing his formula. Faxing the marci-kids information along with a nice cover letter explaining that he is still uncomfortable, not sleeping well, and has acidic smelling spit up (all of which are symptoms of untreated or under treated reflux), and asking to please let him try a higher dose may help. The marci-kids information did finally sway my son’s doctor and the higher dose did turn things around for him.
Is he sleeping on an incline (head of mattress elevated)? That may help some, but I don’t think you’ll see great results until he’s on a higher dose.
November 5, 2006 at 9:59 pm #17251InactiveI swear by family doctors because they seem to be in more agreement of higher dosages of meds. Maybe you should try and email Dr. Phillips at Marci kids and have him give you his recommended dosage for your son. Then print out the email and give a copy of it to your doctor. If you notice that they don’t even want to read the letter then you know its time to find a new doctor. Doctors are not perfect and if they don’t read the letter because they think they know more that is a serious problem. That is what happened to us and when the ped didn’t think she needed to read his recommedations because she knew how to treat reflux I decided to go to our family doctor. If you can hold out a little longer with the Alimentum until you can get the right amount of meds before you change formula that would be better. Once the reflux is under control then you can try and change formula. You really want to be able to know what is making a difference be it the formula or the meds.

November 5, 2006 at 10:35 pm #17254Inactivethanks everyone… i am so happy you guys are here to get advice from.. i have been soo confused on this.. and everyone seemed to be on the same page and make a lot of sense.. now i just have to figure out how to get him on a higher dosage.. his GI doc is very well known.. and treats almost all the children here in fairfield (ct) and westchester county…and told me last week that he is maxed out!i am afraid he is too arrogant, and will not listen.
and no he will not sleep in a car seat.. he wakes up shortly into being left there.. i am not sure why.. but he hates it. and he longs to just lye down on his stomach.. and the swing he is outgrowing.. we did it when he was younger.. i dont think he feels secure any other way except his stomach…
i cant believe situations like this can take up all my focus and cause so much stress… everyone tells me to leave it how it is because he is happy.. but it breaks my heart seeing him uncomfortable all night while he sleeps. well thanks everyone again… its so refreshing to here from other people who understand you! if there is any other opinions feel free to share..
