Hi.
I have a seven week old who was diagnosed with reflux two weeks ago. He is on Zantac and it is helping to at least reduce his screaming during feedings. He still spits up a bunch. but here’s my question. For about a month, he has had a rash. It started on his face. Dr said it was just excema. It has progressively gotten worse.. spread to arms, chest, legs. dr says it is “baby rash” and doesn’t seem concerned. Baby is on nutramigen. Can a baby be allergic to nutramigen when it is a “hypo allergenic” formula? I bought a soy formula today for him to try. He HATED it and wouldn’t drink it. I am going back to the doctor this week for his 8 week immunizations and I plan on asking this question, but wanted to know if anyone had a baby with a BAD rash who was on nutramigen.
I just bought the gentle naturals stuff to try.
November 3, 2006 at 5:14 pm #17165AnonymousInactiveyes, they can. we are on alimentum currently… but i know that soo many people on here have there kids on neocate.. because their babies didnt tolerate the nutramigen or alimentum.. sooo.. yes, i am pretty sure your baby can still be having a reaction to the milk in the formula…
November 3, 2006 at 5:14 pm #17166AnonymousInactiveyes my son was intolerant to it. it is not truly hypo-as it does have milk proteins in it,.he also cant tolerate soy, its called milk/soy protein intolerance. he is on neocate, and doing great~

November 3, 2006 at 10:20 pm #17179AnonymousInactivewhen i switched him to it he was fine for about 3 weeks. then all of a sudden started refluxing like crazy and had a lot of pain even though he was in a super high dose of zegerid. he also had mucous in the stools and gas. apparenlty the milk proteins built up in his system and started to damage his GI tract….
November 3, 2006 at 10:20 pm #17180AnonymousInactivemany moms do report rashes like your childs also.
November 4, 2006 at 7:59 am #17183AnonymousInactivereal bad night. woke up vomiting several times. thinking of going today and getting so,e alimentum. But is there any diff btwn nutramigan and alimentum
November 4, 2006 at 9:00 am #17184hellbenntKeymasterthere is a bit of a difference- only analogy I can think of is advil & motrin? not sure if that’s a good analogy? my point is that some things work for one and not the other…
November 4, 2006 at 9:50 am #17185AnonymousInactiveI’m wondering… are the rashes like my son has reported in babies who simply have reflux or is it more a sypmtom of babies who have reflux BECAUSE of a food intolerance/??
November 4, 2006 at 10:45 am #17188AnonymousInactivemany babies with reflux have MSPI> you dont get rashes from reflux but from mspi or allergies.
alimentum and nutrimagen are the same thing, like similac advance and enfamil lipil.November 4, 2006 at 11:05 am #17189hellbenntKeymasterhttps://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&am p;am p;am p;PN=1&TPN=1

November 4, 2006 at 11:07 am #17190AnonymousInactiveMy son has had eczema from 2 weeks old on. It really doesn’t always mean that they are allergic to what they are eating. In our case my son’s eczema was started by a milk/soy protein allergy but then continued on well past the time that he consumed milk or soy. Our ped and ped dermatologist said that eczema is common when they are young. Have you thought about taking your baby to a dermatologist to see exactly what is going on? Sometimes it is something as simple as using dove unscented soap and aquaphor lotion to clear it up. We noticed Isaac’s skin became worse with the gentle naturals bath stuff. My son’s reflux was caused by a stomach that did not mature at a normal rate and his stomach folds over next to the stomach valve-this was found through an endoscopy.
November 4, 2006 at 4:09 pm #17203AnonymousInactiveThanks for the suggestion about the dermatologist. I have been using that Gentle Naturals only for 2 days. My sister came over today and said she thought his face looked better.
I decided to try the Alimentum anyway. Figure, what can it hurt. I read on another blog that there is a slight difference between nutramigen and alimentum. One mom said her son did better on the alimentum. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but my little one didn’t spit up after the first feeding on it a few hours ago. MIRACLE. Holding my breath for the next feeding.
I was hoping to avoid invasive testing if we could. I have a pediatrician appt on Wednesday. Gonna see how he does on this new formula the next few days and with the gentle naturals. God willing it works.
