The dr said Isaac has to go back on reflux medicine and needs to go see his ped gi again. He wakes up screaming at night now multiple times a night. I started to notice that he would spit up here and there and he was gagging alot while eating or drinking. I guess all of the signs for reflux were there but i was really hoping that it was not reflux. The dr wanted us to start back w/protonix but it is soooo expensive ($50 a month) so I talked him into letting me just try zantac for now but it generally loses its effectiveness quickly for Isaac. He had also lost a little weight but not enough to be too concerned. I just really wish that he could get over the reflux and be a healthy little boy again. I asked the dr if this means that the reflux was ever really gone and he said that it may come and go through his childhood. 🙁 Isaac is 16 months old now and I really thought it was all over. When the dr told me to put him back on medicine I lost it! I just started crying-I know things could be alot worse but other things weigh on my mind too. I have to go to a urologist for myself b/c I have had a UTI that is really bad for 3 weeks now and after 2 rounds of antibiotics my family dr thinks something is very wrong. My appt is not for another 2 weeks and I am in lots of pain until then. Sorry to whine so much!

I went to his ped. and he did stool tests, but found nothing. The ped. wants me to go back to the ped. gi, but I am reluctant… I just am not ready to go through all this again. I am also thinking about going to an allergist to see if something could be bothering him that he is eating/drinking. Sorry to hear about the UTI, I used to get them frequently and they would knock me out for a few days with the extreme pain. I hope that it turns out to be nothing!! RLM4262006-10-31 8:43:20
October 30, 2006 at 2:15 pm #16831AnonymousInactiveOh, I’m sorry to hear about Isaac needing reflux meds again. I’m sure you wish you could just put this behind you for good. My three year old is having ocassional problems with reflux after being med free since 9 months of age. Some of the moms here said they use TUMS for their older kids and I’ve tried it with Ellie and it definitely seems to help her. Maybe some tums in addition to the Zantac would make him more comfortable. I think you have to space them at least 4 hours apart, though.
I hope the UTI clears up soon. I know they can be really painful. Sorry you’re having such a rough time right now. Please keep us posted on Isaac and yourself. Good luck.
October 31, 2006 at 8:07 am #16892AnonymousInactiveRobin- I am wondering if it could be allergy related also! I hope they figure out what is bothering his tummy quickly w/out too many tests.
Christine-I remember you posting about her getting the reflux back. It is just horrible. I have to go back and reflux proof the bed again and watch his diet a little closer.
Thanks to both of you for responding!

If you don’t want to do the protonix, can you just get the solutabs, or did he not do well with the prevacid. My general feeling is that if it’s coming back to the point where he’s choking and gagging, then best not to mess with it and go for the big guns right from the start. That’s just my opinion though. We’re dealing with something similar and awful with Hailey that I’ll post about under a different thread.. meds not seeming to work anymore, waking up screaming after reflux attacks, major Sandifer’s.. it’s a nightmare. I feel your pain.
As for the UTI, I hope that you can get it under control soon. I have a friend with recurring severe that are resistant to treatment, and she finally had to go to a naturopath to get things under control. Now she drink A LOT of cranberry juice every day and I think it’s helped. Good luck.

I’m sorry to hear about your little boy. I can’t imagine how discouraging that must be.As for the UTI, I was going to mention the same thing Lori did. My little sister had constant UTI problems when she was little and the cranberry juice really helped. At least something to try until you get things figured out (or maybe you already are). Good luck with everything.
October 31, 2006 at 1:53 pm #16928AnonymousInactivesorry to hear bout youre uti, i would be cautious with abx cause you can become resistant to them and whetever infection that you might have will come back as a “super bug”. I learned alot about this in nursing school, and with my patients. deff drink cranberry juice, and they sell pills over the counter to help with this. also try not to hold youre pee in to long that can aggravate it even more…. good luck and i hope you feel better
