If so, what are they on them for? How long did it take for them to kick in?
My little guy went to see a specialist yesterday, and they prescribed these for him. He pulls his knees up to his chest all day and night long and is very gassy. The doctor says he is colicy…
WDYT?
October 19, 2006 at 10:50 am #16070AnonymousInactiveOK – i had never heard of this so checked it out – same thing as Levsin – if you go to parent-2-parent.com/forum…. there are some babies there on this medication but i have no idea what it is for (although for some reason i thought that it was given to motility kids??). Don’t recall anyone here who uses it.
October 19, 2006 at 10:57 am #16074AnonymousInactiveMy doc started Abby on them for a while before we finally figured out what was going on (or should I say he listened to me and figured out what was going on – I knew what was going on). I guess it has something to do with motility and when we saw the pediatric GI, he said there was no reason for her to keep taking them. Don’t know much else about them except like Thais said, it is the same as Levsin.

October 19, 2006 at 11:00 am #16078AnonymousInactiveThe passing of the food through the digestive system, how well the baby poops, consistency, whether stomach empties ok…. etc etc… ie how well food moves through the system

October 19, 2006 at 12:19 pm #16092AnonymousInactiveLevsin drops act as a muscle relaxant. From what we were told by our doc, the idea of giving them to babies is that if “colic” is caused by intestinal discomfort, cramping, or gas, which I guess is the current but debatable school of thought, then they should relax things so that there is less stomach cramping. Because the cause of colic is really unknown, and levsin can have side effects like all meds (which I don’t know of, sorry), then it is controversial whether or not this will help or should be done.
I do remember that Jill (Aidan’s mom) was prescribed these. I can’t remember if they worked for him or not.
Along this journey, I’ve learned that doctors will prescribe meds without telling you what they are or what their reasoning is. I now never leave the office until I know what they are prescribing, why they are prescribing it, and what kind of follow-up they intend to do to see if it’s working or not.
Good luck to you.

October 19, 2006 at 4:01 pm #16120hellbenntKeymasterthis was posted once on the yahoo breastfeedingreflux board:
what’s the connection between gas and reflux?
Gas is created when something isn’t digested properly; for example,
beans are generally harder to digest than other foods, which is why
they are notorious for causing gas in most people (they are generally
not a common problem with breastfed babies through mom’s milk, though;
this is just a common example to help make sense.)Also, gas puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter (the muscle at the
top of the stomach that helps move and keep things down), making it
easier for whatever is in the stomach to be refluxed.October 19, 2006 at 5:58 pm #16136AnonymousInactiveHi! Aidan was rx’d them when he was about 3ish months old for “colic”(he was also on reflux meds at the time, didn’t really have colic..moron gi, but they are nice to have around for gas attacks). Basically they work like mylicon on steroids! I have used them a couiple of times, only when his gas was REALLY bad. It’s best to use them before they get seriously gassy, I wax told to give them to him in the early afternoon and at night. I recently used them again a few nights ago when he had some bad cramps. They did work well..not to mention the nice side effect of sleepiness. I’m not sure about the motility thing.
October 20, 2006 at 10:02 am #16190AnonymousInactiveWe were also RX’d Levsin drops when we had Alexis also diagnosised with colic. We realized that was not here problem since the drops worked only a little with her gas but she would still cry with bottles and always brings in legs up to her chest screaming all day not just a certain time period throughout the day she also did it in her sleep which to me was a sign that there was something else going on. I would also feel her stomach and she did not seem that gassy to be in so much pain so I insisted there was something else going on. For poor Alexis it took us until she was 3 months to start her on reflux meds. With Taylor she does have a lot of GI issues esp with gas but they are mostly due to food allergies the Levsin drops do work her on they calm her down and she is able to pass gas. We actually found that Cocyntal drops which are homepathic work so much better on her gas, it calms her down right away and she passes the gas almost immediately.
October 20, 2006 at 1:03 pm #16210AnonymousInactiveSue, where do you get the cocyntal drops? I’d really like to try giveing him something natural, although I do like the levsin. I just bought some homeopathic ear drops for him Similasan (sp?) that work great for his earaches, and would like to try more remedies like that!
Thanks!
October 20, 2006 at 2:12 pm #16225AnonymousInactiveYou can find the Cocyntal at Whole Foods or you can order them online. They come in a box of 30 single dose vials you just tear off the top and give it directly in the mouth. Very simple and Taylor seems to respond to it very well. You can give up to 3 doses if needed at one time meaning give 1 dose if it doesn’t work wait 15 mins give another etc. But there is no max amt you can give in 1 day period.
October 20, 2006 at 6:12 pm #16249AnonymousInactiveahh that’s awesome, we have a whole foods right around the corner! Thanks!!
