Hey,
I just wanted to check back and let you all know how our appointment with Dr. Thompson in Boise went. I wasn’t quite sure where I should write this but here goes….
We saw him last Wednesday. He was well prepared for the appointment. He had read and digested well David’s records. He was very nice and seemed very knowlegeable. He took plenty of time, and was a good listener. To be honest, he was much better prepared for the appointment than I was.
He said that he didn’t think we’d gotten to the heart of David’s problems yet, that it seemed more like we’d been covering them up with band aids. He said he doesn’t think that David has reflux at all. If he did, he thought he should have been much better by now (on the meds he’s been taking).
He said that he really thinks that he has Eosiniphilic Enteropathy. It would explain the intestinal stuff as well as the continued irritation in his esophogus. He set up an appointment to scope both top and bottom so that we could find out for sure what is going on in there and get biopsies (we do that next Wednesday). They are also going to get blood for a bunch of lab work while he’s under.
I told him that one thing I was concerned about was whether David had a zinc deficiency since Sarah had had one and his skin has been so bad. He said it’s a definite posibility and said they would take a zinc level too. I have brought that up a number of times to my ped and several other doctors previously. It was such a relief to have him be so open to checking.
While I am not thrilled that we might be dealing with EE, I am so thrilled to feel like someone was finally listening and is willing to go in and figure out what is causing internal bleeding etc.
One other thing I felt good about is that I have felt that it was totally wrong to be pushing solids down David when they cause increased mucus in his diapers, rashes etc. Especially with knowing he’s anemic because of blood loss it seems like you would want to decrease inflamation not increase it (Both Ped and Ped GI’s recommendation). Anyway, it sounded like Dr. Thompson was definitely on the same page with that without me even bringing it up.
I could not have been happier. There was not one thing that concerned me or that I felt like we’d been headed in the wrong direction with that he did not address. And that was without me being entirely clear (I’m not the best communicator when I’m short slept and stressed out).
Anyway, thank you all for your suggestions and helping me have the courage to try someone new!

We’ve got a nineteen year spread between our oldest and youngest. Kind of Crazy! I was just glad Nathan got to meet David before he left for the MTC in February. Actually, he was home in January and I don’t know what I would have done without his help. He would watch David when he got up in the mornings for an hour or two and it was the only solid sleep I got. I went into withdrawl after he left.
Would you mind if I e-mail you with some specific questions about your experiences with kids and general anesthesia at St. Lukes?
Thanks,
Kara
