My son Grant who is 6 mos old has been diagnosed with an inguinial hernia in his groin area. We have surgery scheduled Thrusday. Anybody else have this done and have any general advice? Does this possibly explain arching during feedings and delayed pooping and being backed up? Thanks for the advice!

Carter had this done at 7 weeks old (he was only 36 weeks gestation). It was actually a pretty easy surgery as Carter was not moving much yet, so I don’t know how it will be with a 6 month old. We only had to do high doeses of Tylenol for pain and no narcotics at all. He was back to himself within a day or two.

Yes, it could explain the pooping issue, but I am not sure about the arching. I would think that is reflux pain. Who knows, though, if things get moving along better after the surgery, then maybe it will improve things all around.

I forgot to mention, that Carter had a repair on both sides…

Hello-
My son had two inguinal hernias repaired when he was 4 months old. The surgery went really well and he only had to stay for one night. He recovered really quickly and we only had to give him tylenol once we got home.

Also, we thought he only had one hernia, but when they did the surgery, they found he had two – one on each side. So they repaired both. I guess it’s really common to have two (even if you can’t tell from the outside).

I agree with Ann Marie… It might be causing the pooping issues, but I doubt it’s causing the arching.
