I have finally realized that I’ve had PPD for some time now and am finally seeking treatment for it. My ob-gyn has prescribed Zoloft but she said in the first month of taking it, it can cause insomnia and increased anxiety until your body adjusts to it. I really can’t afford to lose any sleep in the meantime…so I wondered what side effects other moms experience while taking this drug, if any.
Thanks!
October 10, 2006 at 1:34 pm #15310AnonymousInactiveI don’t have any experience with this med, but just wanted to with you good luck. I’m glad that you’re getting treatment and hope that it helps quickly. HUGS.
October 10, 2006 at 1:47 pm #15312AnonymousInactiveI took it for 8 years, and my 7 year old is on it as well..I was hesitant on that descision, but it’s one of the only ones approved for pediatric use with OCD. I took it for anxiety/panic attacks, and did very well on it! I never got the insomnia, and neither has my son, he has only been on it a short time, I just got a bit nauseous and had tummy issues while my body adjusted. The side effects usually only last 2 weeks I believe. Feel free to email me if you want! [email protected] sister has also taken it, for depression when she was in high school and she also did very well on it, and only took it for a year.
October 10, 2006 at 1:50 pm #15313AnonymousInactiveI’m didn’t take zoloft either, but I did take lexapro until I got pregnant again.
All I remember about it was that I didn’t want to eat anything. That’s not normal for me!!! It was a good side effect as far as I was concerned. I actually had to remember to eat.
I don’t recall having any symptoms your doc told you about.
It’s soo hard having PPD and dealing with a reflux baby!!!! My heart goes out to you.
Talk about it with anyone that will listen. I think that helps. I also joined a PPD board for support. Just to know others were feeling the same way somehow made me feel more “normal”.
PPD is not easy to have. It’s downright hard.
Sounds like you’re leary of starting the med? Start anything is my advice(if you want it). It helps you have more get up and go. I loved being on it and the way I felt on it.
The only warning is that it’s really hard to get off of. You have to slowly wean off over months and months. Otherwise you have freaky side effects. I’m sure not everyone has this, but that’s just with me at least.
Let me know if you need anything. I’m here to support you
October 10, 2006 at 2:20 pm #15321AnonymousInactivezoloft made my skin crawl—but i am really sensitive to the side effects of anti-depressants for some reason. i have had the anxiety they talk about when starting a new anti-depressant. i found that if i took a zanax every morning when i took the antidepressant for the first week that it took care of the side effects——- and then i didn’t need the xanax after the first week.
October 10, 2006 at 2:27 pm #15322AnonymousInactiveOh, I just remembered…
My doc started me on a small dose and worked me up to what he wanted me on. I had to cut the pills in half.
That probably helped with the side effects. Ask about that.
October 10, 2006 at 2:33 pm #15323AnonymousInactiveJust wanted to say “hi” Megan.
I am glad you are seeking help. I didn’t realize I had it with Dylan until way after the fact and it would have been better for both of us if I had sought treatment.
Hang in there and you are doing an amazing job! Going through all you have been through between Nicu and reflux, you need to realize how well you are doing for Mary.
October 10, 2006 at 3:46 pm #15331AnonymousInactiveIt’s wonderful that you are getting help. I never had any problems with PPD after Kayla was born but after Abby came along, it was a totally different story. I just couldn’t stop crying, I was worried about EVERYTHING, feeling so guilty about having another baby and thought Kayla would be upset (which she wasn’t). I talked to my doctor (who has been my doc for years) and he started me on Zoloft (25mg). After a couple of weeks, it wasn’t cutting it so he increased me to 50mg, then again to 100mg. I felt like a new woman. Never noticed any particular side effects when I started on it and have been on it since March. In August, I started to wean off of it and am down to 50 mg with no noted problems. My goal is to be off it by New Years or shortly after. It really helped get through a tough time and I am so relieved I got some help. PPD is nothing to mess around with and the combo of meds and having someone to talk to is a really great way of getting through it.
Hope it helps you out and know you are definitely not alone!

October 10, 2006 at 5:05 pm #15335AnonymousInactivehello i have been on practically every antidepressant out there. Zoloft did not work for me it made me have diarrhea. i have been on prozac for years now and it works just fine for me. basically you have to find the med that works right for you. It wil take trial and error, but you will find something that works for you!! don’t forget that all meds take a few weeks to kick in and during that time you most likely will have some side effects,ie, nausea diarrhea lack of appetite. you are introducing a foriegn thing into youre system so youre body is going to take a little getting used to. i applaud you for getting help. alot of people have a stigma against psych issues but they are the ones who usually need the medicine the most(like tom cruise) if you have any questions you can pm me good luck and stay strong

October 10, 2006 at 5:59 pm #15340AnonymousInactiveokay thats good i thought i might have offended you!!!
October 10, 2006 at 6:15 pm #15341AnonymousInactiveThanks for all the encouragement! She is starting me at 25mg for a week then up to 50 mg after that. She wanted to start me slow so I don’t experience too many side effects (like insomnia, anxiety). She hopes to have me off in 6 months to a year. I’m also starting counseling so hopefully the combination will work for me!
Thanks again.
October 10, 2006 at 9:38 pm #15360AnonymousInactiveGood luck with your counseling and the meds. I could definitely have used both after the birth of all three of mine. I get terrible post partum anxiety and it was pure h*ll for months after each of my babies was born.
Unfortunately, I’m very senstive to SSRI’s and cannot take them, but I have friends who have been helped tremendously by Zoloft. I did get insomnia the few times I tried SSRI meds, but I was able to get to sleep using Benadryl instead of a prescription sleeping pill. From what I’ve heard and read the side effects usually are not long lasting…so hang in there and give it some time.
I hope you are feeling better soon.
