Little Noah has had a fever now for the past 2.5 days, and he’s been puking more than he ever has before. If he cries even the littlest bit, he chokes, gags and vomits.
He hates to eat when he’s feeling good, so now its next to impossible to get anything in him. He has lost 5 oz in 3 days, and he cant stand to loose much more. I’ve been syringing his milk, which has been a chore I might add. I can only distract him so much before he figures out whats really going on. Today, I finished his 5 oz syringe feeding (which took 1.5 hours). Then I loaded him up in the van to run to the store, followed by a doc visit, then picking up my two kids from school. We no more than pull out of the driveway and Noah projectile pukes all of the 5 oz I just got into him, plus I think some milk from the morning feed too. Its everywhere! So I pull back in the garage, unload and start cleaning. His car seat is now disasembled, and the carpet cleaner is out so I can clean the stinky milk out of the van upholstery. Now I cant even take Noah to his doc appt because I have no car seat thats usable. I cant go to the store to pick up food for a valentines surprise dinner for my hubby. And now I have to try to syringe another feeding into him thats going to take another several hours to complete. And he’s still down a lot of calories from what he puked up earlier. I guess I’m so frustrated because its sooo hard to get food into him to begin with, and now I dont know whats going on with this vomiting and high fever. Should I try to keep forcing milk into him, or just let him have a little here and there?

I know weight gain is a concern and there are very little calories in the pedialyte, but hydration should be your first concern. Dylan lost over a pound when he had rotovirus right at a year old and he wasn’t on the charts then to begin with, but he did gain it all back once he felt better.
Hang in there and I’m sorry you are going through this. Call hubby, have him pick up something easy (chinese, pizza, etc..) and have a glass of wine with him when all the kids are in bed!
February 14, 2006 at 6:14 pm #1514AnonymousInactiveSo sorry you all are going through this. it was horrible. we are just giving up on holidays next year hoping we will have our lives back next year. I already posted this, but in case you didn’t read it. Our doc. said to lay off the milk while they are still vomiting. It will make them vomit more. Just give him unflavored pedialyte for now to hydrate. It does last 7-10 days. Like our reflux babies need to be any skinnier!!! (((hugs))) to baby!

Did you have your follow up appt. with the psych today?
February 15, 2006 at 7:23 am #1537AnonymousInactiveThanks for asking, Lisa. I did have the appointment. Right now I’m just feeling so down and discouraged and scared- not quite up to posting about it. I’ll post soon. Hope that Noah is feeling better today.

Is the vomitting accompanied with diarrhea? If so, it could be a sign of stomach virus and then yes, you should stay away from millk…but if it is not, take him to ped… if he cannot see anything, get them to run some urine maybe?? Matthew was the same way and he ended up having a urine infection which started to get better after a couple of days on antibiotics… if it is that kind of infection, then our ped said to try to refeed him what he had thrown up.
My ped said that babies with infections and fever will lose about 8% of body weight from water loss and that once they are filling better they should regain that…. if they lose anything more than that, then it is probably muscle and other stuff…. but not to worry about 8%
I hope he is feeling better today…
Lori — have not caught up with posts… sorry you are going through a tough time too….

The doc mentioned a urinary infection, but said that its really uncommon in babies over 6 months, so she didnt run a test. His fever has almost broke, but he is still really crabby and cant sleep well at all. He’s really congested and I think that has a lot to do with it. Thanks for the info about the weight lose. I have been worried sick since Noah has gone from 18lbs 14oz down to 18lbs 5oz in the matter of 5 days. Granted, he has been eating less, but I was shocked to see how much weight he had lost. It was so hard to get him to gain the weight in the first place, and now I have to try to get even more food into him to gain it back. I didnt even think about a fever causing weight loss, but that makes a lot of sense. Hopefully he will start to put it back on again. At times like this, I can see how tube feeding would be a benefit.
I’m glad to hear that Matthew is doing better. I didnt realize that urinary infections can cause such extreme sickness in babies. I would have never thought it would cause vomitting and such. Sounds like you have a wonderful Ped who is extremely thorough.

Thanks….
Yes, when babies have fever, they lose water adn they lose a LOT. Not only because they are not eating less but also because of sweating adn because there is a lot of water used to clear the infection. I am surprised about the urinary infection… i mean matthew is 6months old and he justt got it… so i don’t know what to say! Also, bear in mind that some babies throw up when they have a fever so hopefully it was something that is getting better!
As i said on my other post — i really think that you will know if you need the tube or not. Trust your instincts. Hopefully everything will be alright though!!
