does anyone out therehave a child who looks they are being choked when they have a reflux episode??? it also kind of looks like grace is having a seizure. nothing really comes up in her mouth but thick mucus and i have to suction out her mouth. maybe that could be sandifers?????
September 12, 2006 at 1:55 pm #13424AnonymousInactiveI haven’t heard too many moms mention thick mucus with their refluxers, and my two definitely did not have it. Maybe you should call or take her to the doctor. I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful.
September 12, 2006 at 2:35 pm #13426AnonymousInactiveMy son does a lot of choking and coughing with his reflux, but has never had thick mucus. You may want to discus it with you ped. It may be something other then the reflux.
September 12, 2006 at 3:50 pm #13428AnonymousInactiveMy 4.5 month old’s spit up sometimes looks really mucousy…almost stringy. I thought this was normal……….but it’s not??
It used to look like curdled milk before we got on reflux meds.
Hmmmmmmmmmm

September 12, 2006 at 4:31 pm #13430AnonymousInactivewhen my son spits up, its like formula and saliva mixed together and its stringy. i could see it being described as mucousy…
unless you think there is actual mucous, then there could be another problem.
September 12, 2006 at 5:45 pm #13432AnonymousInactivewell the doctors at the hospital don’t seem to think that it’s anything other than reflux. when i go to the gi doc on thurs if he doesnt help me i am going to freek out. grace just had 2 episodes back 2 back this is like her fourth one today. how many times can a child hold her breath for it to not be good for her grace takes her bottle withot a problem she doesnt scream hen i feed her. it’s always about 1/2 to 1hour after she eats. a small drop of formula comes out her nose then she holds her breath arches her neck and her back and looks like shes being choked. when she is done the only thing in her mouth and nose is sticky mucos but no formula comes out. i want to scream at these doctors oh well i will hopefully get some answers on thursday

The nose cavity or whatever you call the connection between the nose and the throat is one of the most sensitive areas of the body. Therefore, it is extremely painful when milk comes out through teh nose with some acid in it. It just brought back some horrible memories of when Matthew used to do this. Hailey also used to do it (check s&h’s mum). It is so painful that they are indeed holding their breath because of what is going on and the acid burning. We could not control this much, other than by adding cereal to his bottle. I think that the thicker whatever they are taking is, the less likely it is going to make it up to the nose. Not even the prevacid helped him. Now he vomits and stuff comes out of his nose, but there is no screaming and there is no holding the breath.
IT IS A SIGN OF GERD. Means tons of acid is coming up… some peds will tell you, like mine did, (BTW we do no longer see him) that it is OK for stuff to come out of their nose because everything is connected. Well, NO NO NO. CLearly, too much acid is coming up!!
OMG- i am sorry – this just made me teary because it was so so painful to watch him do this.
September 12, 2006 at 8:37 pm #13437AnonymousInactiveAlso, i think i just read your intro post. I don’t know when the GI appointment is or where you live, but if your baby has not gained any weight, it is a clear sign that something is wrong??
Are there any other signs like lose stools? Or rashes. I am just thinking maybe MSPI?? Maybe only reflux…
You can do some mylanta cherry supreme – we were told we could do 2.5ml 6x a day when Mattthew was about 12lbs, so i think you can do at least 4. It may make her poopie runny, but that would be OK… just while you wait for the GI.
If there is no weight gain… how much is she eating? enough to thrive or not enough? sorry you said she takes the bottle well?
i would personally try to get an endo – i know that some people do not like tests, but it is so simple and easy and can give you so many answers!
Sorry – failure to thrive babies have to be taken seriously
