My little one is 7 wks old. He has been on prevacid for 2 wks as of yesterday. Of course, the doctor did not put him on a high enough dose so things are not going well. I am tired and just plan angry. I am breastfeeding him and all the pulling is really killing me. I am so sore. I know he hurts, but I just want to scream at him. I am wanting to give up. I didn’t get to breastfeed my first son because the doc said he wasn’t getting enough and told me to supplement. I did what she said and he wouldn’t go back to breastfeeding. The problem wasn’t that he wasn’t getting enough, it was that he had reflux and hurt. Point being, I really want to breastfeed this baby, but it is driving me crazy.
Thanks for letting me vent. If anyone has gone through this and it gotten better please let me know. I mean the whole breastfeeding pulling off thing. I’m afraid he still isn’t on the right dose and things will just continue to get worse. His ped doesn’t even want him on the prevacid because he doesn’t scream all the time and he is gaining weight just fine. UGH!!! Thankfully, I have been able to convince her to do all the things I have wanted. I am afraid however that if he does need a higher dose, she won’t go for it.

I will let the breastfeeding moms answer those questions as I only pumped with both boys for a short time and never put them to breast. I would, however, suggest mylanta about 20 minutes before feeds to cool Justice’s throat so things might go a little smoother? Also, if you can get your ped to prescribe carafate, it will coat his throat and make him feel better to feed.
Sorry I don’t have better advice, just wanted you to know that we are here for you.
Hang in there!

it does get better! Ann Marie has good points about giving mylanta before feeding- you can really give it whenever you need to- so if he’s fussing/pulling then gently unlatch him, squirt like a ml of mylanta in along the inside of his cheek and then put him back on the breast…
can you go to a LLL mtg or somesort of breastfeeding moms group for support? I met a lot of my current friends this way. While the other moms can’t help with the reflux, it’s nice to have a reason to get out of the house. I didn’t leave the house alone w/ jonah until he was about 6wks old- I just couldn’t handle it…so maybe it’s something to ‘plan’ for…
I would also give the pepsid along with the prevacid- just make sure you space out the doses 2hrs or more from one another. The mylanta can be given near the pepsid but the pepsid/mylanta needs to be at least 2hrs from the prevacid.
FAX your doctor. THANK your doctor. Tell what symptoms were and how they’ve improved. Then state what has NOT improved. Then state the facts you’ve found- just facts (like prevacid dosing is _mgs per kilo and Justice is currently on _mgs per kilo, therefore bcse these __ symptoms are still present I am requesting a dose increase to__mgs. Thank you!! You can fax the marci-kids recommendations- offhand I don’t know what they are, but I DO know a good starting point to at least ask (tell) for is 3mgs per kilo per day total (I do believe this is lower than the marci-kids) and this was considered ‘high’ when jonah was on prevacid…
so hang in there as it DOES get better!

June 27, 2006 at 2:35 pm #10662AnonymousInactiveShelby, I’m sorry that you’re having such a hard time. I thought that I was going to die from the pain of Hailey pulling off and on all the time. It did settle down a bit, but I found that a prescription ointment really helped me with the pain of it. Good luck.
There is a Dr. Jack Newman in Canada, who is quite famous in terms of BF and he created this killer ointment that can be prepared at the pharmacy. I found it really helped. If you’re interested, I can try to find the script.
